’This book is a cross between "Downton Abbey" and "Miss Marple". … Perfect for the long winter nights ahead where comfort becomes a key word in everyone's vocabulary.’ – Katherine (Goodreads)

The first book in the new Lady Alkmene Callender Mystery series

A murderous beginning

With her father away in India, Lady Alkmene Callender finds being left to her own devices in London intolerably dull, until the glamorous Broadway star Evelyn Steinbeck arrives in town! Gossip abounds about the New York socialite, but when Ms Steinbeck’s wealthy uncle, Silas Norwhich, is found dead Lady Alkmene finds her interest is piqued. Because this death sounds a lot to her like murder…

Desperate to uncover the truth, Lady Alkmene begins to look into Ms Steinbeck’s past – only to be hampered by the arrival of journalist, Jake Dubois – who believes she is merely an amateur lady-detective meddling in matters she knows nothing about!

But Lady Alkmene refuses to be deterred from the case and together they dig deeper, only to discover that some secrets should never come to light…

The twenties have never been so dangerous

Books 2-7 of Leigh Russell's DI Geraldine Steel series. Book 1 seems to be also available at £0.99.

"When DI Geraldine Steel relocates to the quiet rural town of Woolsmarsh, she expects to find her new home to be somewhere where nothing much ever happens; a space where she can battle her demons in private. But when she finds herself pitted against a twisted killer preying on local young women she quickly discovers how wrong she is..."

Thanks for the heads-up pdurrant. Looked at the deal and its contents. It seems that almost all of that series is based either on serial killers or on the protagonist's personal problems - and (though I'm probably the only one), TBH, it's all getting a bit 'sameish' to me; there's not enough variety any more. You'd never catch Christie, Sayers, Ormerod, Straker, Gregson et al. going down the same path time after time.......

I pass no comment on the content of the series.

But I've managed to resist all the Amazon daily deals this month. It's doing wonders for my TBR pile!

Back in 2016, Strong Poison (6th in the Lord Peter/Harriet Vane series by Dorothy L Sayers) was briefly $0.06 at Kindle US. If you missed that, it has now dropped to $0.51, which is still not bad at all...

link: https://www.amazon.com/Strong-Poison...dp/B008JVJKOY/

Spoiler:
Quote:
Harriet Vane may face the hangman for the murder of her fiancé—and only Lord Peter Wimsey can save her—in this “model detective story” (The New York Times).

Lord Peter Wimsey comes to the trial of Harriet Vane for a glimpse at one of the most engaging murder cases London has seen in years. Unfortunately for the detective, the crime’s details are distractingly salacious, and there is little doubt that the woman will be found guilty. A slightly popular mystery novelist, she stands accused of poisoning her fiancé, a literary author and well-known advocate of free love. Over the course of a few weeks, she bought strychnine, prussic acid, and arsenic, and when her lover died the police found enough poison in his veins to kill a horse. But as Lord Peter watches Harriet in the dock, he begins to doubt her guilt—and to fall in love.

As Harriet awaits the hangman, Lord Peter races to prove her innocence, hoping that for the first time in his life, love will triumph over death.

Strong Poison is the sixth book in the Lord Peter Wimsey Mysteries, but you may enjoy the series by reading the books in any order.

This ebook features an illustrated biography of Dorothy L. Sayers including rare images from the Marion E. Wade Center at Wheaton College.

Swan Song, by Robert R. McCammon, looks more thriller-ish than mystery-ish, and also has paranormal elements, neither of which excites me. However, it has dropped to only $0.23 at Kindle US, so if that sort of thing is your sort of thing, you may want to take a look. Oh yeah, and it won the Bram Stoker award in 1987...

link: https://www.amazon.com/Swan-Song-Rob...dp/B005T54IAY/

Spoiler:
Quote:
McCammon’s epic bestselling novel about a girl psychic struggling to survive in the aftermath of a nuclear holocaust

Something flashes in nine-year-old Swan’s brain, telling her that trouble is coming. Maybe it’s her mother, fed up with her current boyfriend and ready to abandon their dismal trailer park and seek a new home. But something far worse is on the horizon. Death falls from the sky—nuclear bombs which annihilate American civilization. Though Swan survives the blast, this young psychic’s war is just beginning.

As the survivors try to make new lives in the wasteland, an evil army forms, intent on murdering all those tainted with the diseases brought by fallout. When Swan finds a mysterious amulet that could hold the key to humankind’s salvation, she draws the attention of a man more dangerous than any nuclear bomb. To rescue mankind, this little girl will have to grow up fast.

P.S. Has anyone read any of this author's historical mysteries? I really like historicals, but haven't run into any of his before. Just wondering if anyone has an opinion?

Rebecca Scherm — Unbecoming
https://www.amazon.com/Unbecoming-No.../dp/B00LFZ86DM
https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/unbecoming-1

Spoiler:
EDGAR AWARD NOMINEE FOR BEST FIRST NOVEL

On the grubby outskirts of Paris, Grace restores bric-a-brac, mends teapots, re-sets gems. She calls herself Julie, says she’s from California, and slips back to a rented room at night. Regularly, furtively, she checks the hometown paper on the Internet. Home is Garland, Tennessee, and there, two young men have just been paroled. One, she married; the other, she’s in love with. Both were jailed for a crime that Grace herself planned in exacting detail. The heist went bad—but not before she was on a plane to Prague with a stolen canvas rolled in her bag. And so, in Paris, begins a cat-and-mouse waiting game as Grace’s web of deception and lies unravels—and she becomes another young woman entirely.

Unbecoming is an intricately plotted and psychologically nuanced heist novel that turns on suspense and slippery identity. With echoes of Alfred Hitchcock and Patricia Highsmith, Rebecca Scherm’s mesmerizing debut is sure to entrance fans of Gillian Flynn, Marisha Pessl, and Donna Tartt.

I listened to the audiobook version of Unbecoming. I think the comparisons in the blurb are an overreach, but it's a twisty and enjoyable ride.

McCammon's historical mystery series is fantastic. I would highly recommend it. Will Thomas also writes excellent historical mystery novels.

Swan Song is an epic, apocalyptic horror novel. Similar in theme (but not execution) to The Stand. Not a favorite of mine, but a genuine classic in horror circles.
