latest round of Android malware makes it seem like the problem isn't going to go away

Lookout is a free security app, and it checks every download before installation. Like any antivirus, it can't protect against unknown threats, but it's emcouraging that they're the ones who found this.
BTW, it also performs a weekly scan of everything on the device, so if something was downloaded before it was discovered, it'll catch it then. |

and now droidkungfu was found this weekend. it was undetectable by antivirus.
