A few basic questions about 3G kindle.

Today I decided the kindle is for me after holding one at best buy. I'm trying to decide between the wifi or 3G model. With the 3G version is there a monthly charge? Also does that mean I will be able to surf the web anywhere I can get a 3G signal? Also which carrier provides the 3G service? Ok final question. Does google maps and gmail work well on the browser? Thanks in advance for the information.

No monthly charge for 3G and you can surf the web (slowly on eink) anywhere you get a 3G or WiFi signal. The carrier depends on which country you are in. In the U.S. it's AT&T. Gmail works in the browser. I can't speak for Google Maps because I've never tried it.

I concur with daffy4u but use of the browser is marginal at best. For any serious Gmail or Google map use I use my phone.

But sometimes, even in crowded areas, there's no wifi available and then the Kindle let you check your email on 3g for free.

Yes, if you're in the US or UK. Maybe in other countries. I think in some countries you're limited to a few web sites, but you're not limited in the US or UK.

AT & T in the US, Vodafone in the UK. Don't know about anywhere else.

Gmail works (personally I prefer the HTML-only version on the Kindle, though the full version does work)

For maps, I have http://www.kindlemap.net (which shows Google maps in a Kindle-friendly format) and http://maps.google.com/m (mobile version of Google Maps) bookmarked. Both work, but I haven't used them enough to decide which I prefer.

I'd also suggest bookmarking http://www.google.com/gwt/n - it'll attempt to convert any web page into a mobile-friendly version.

I find the browser really quite useful, but then my phone's browser is rubbish, as is pretty much everything else on the phone Most people with good smartphones seem to prefer browsing on their phone.
