I guess the back-up issue depends also on whether you re-consume your digital media or are more of a use-once-and-discard type. I like to reread, rewatch and so on. Therefore not losing my collections is important for me. Yep. My father died earlier this year and one of the things I did was go through his box of photographs and keep sakes. Lot's of memories in there. My parents would pull the pictures out every couple of years to show the grandkids and remember.

My condolences. I lost mine almost exactly a year ago.
