Talking Free (Kindle) Ancient Dreams by Marc Alexander [New Zealand Epic Fairy Tale Fantasy]

Ancient Dreams by New Zealand author Marc Alexander (SFE) is the 1st novel in his Wells of Ythan quartet of epic fantasy set in a fairy tale-styled world, this installment featuring an apprentice toymaker's quest to find a vanished enchanted princess to unseat the obligatory tyrannical regent, free courtesy of publisher Endeavour Press' Venture imprint, who are e-printing it from its 1988 edition originally out from Headline.

Currently free @ Amazon (available to Canadians & in the UK and pretty much everywhere else that Amazon sells worldwide, since this is being done via their KDP Select exclusive-or-else program)

And this has been the selected 3rd (non-repeat) free ebook thread of the day.

Because not only are sfnal freebies always welcome (and it's been a pretty good week for sfnal deals and bundle offerings as well), it's unprecedented, but certainly quite a treat, to get a hat trick of Endeavour's Venture reprints in a single week.

As a reminder, a number of their Venture Press titles have dropped to just 99 cents on sale (some of them appear to be Kindle Countdown specials which are not available to Canadians, but others are ordinary discounts from their regularly $2.99-ish prices), should there be any authors whose backlist works you've been particularly enjoying from their generous selection of previous freebies: linkage to browse the lot under $2.

Enjoy!

Description
A new power will rise…

Once, the kingdom of Ythan was great and prosperous.

But then, a Princess, the sole heir to the kingdom, disappeared.

As time passed many lost hope that their Lady Eloria could or would return. The Golden Age crumbled in despair.

Now, she has faded into legend. Ythan has fallen to the hands of the corrupt and the greedy. With its glory long gone, Ythan has become a place of terror and evil.

Under the tyrannical reign of the Regent, every corner of this great land is suffering.

But amidst the darkness of the realm, there is a glimmer of hope.

Could the princess be found? Could order and peace be restored?

But who dared to find her?

The answer: Krispin Tommasson, an apprentice toymaker. He and his fellow companions are Ythan’s only chance salvation.

Together, they must quest to discover the whereabouts of the mythical Princess – or Ythan may perish forever…

Ancient Dreams is an enthralling fantasy epic, the first of The Wells of Ythan series.

Thank you for the offer. I was drawn in by the name Ythan and the protagonist being a toymaker. I'll see how it goes.

I wasn't that impressed by it TBH. I couldn't work out exactly what author was pitching at in the tone of the book; there were bits reminiscent of Tolkein, Clark Ashton Smith and William Hope Hodgson, and the writing style was rather mannered - was he trying to write like a cross between William Morris and ER Eddison or was he trying to avoid that?

Don't get me wrong, it was readable, but nothing makes me want to look for the next instalment.

You sold me on it.

I picked it up and I'm starting it today.

Thank you!

Here's the original cover.

By the way, if the author is still alive, he would be almost 90 years old.
