Start in Tray in Windows 7
Dumb question here -- I just upgraded to a new computer running Windows 7. How do I set calibre to automatically start in the tray so it runs downloads when I turn on my computer?

calibre --start-in-tray
Also in Preferences->interface enable the system tray icon. |

geneaber,
Do you want Calibre to start when your computer starts? If so, copy the calibre short cut on the windows menu into the start up folder (also on the windows menu). The info in the previous post will cause calibre to go to the system tray when calibre starts but it won't force calibre to start when your computer starts. |

Great but is there something like this that works for Calibre Portable? It used to work if I used PowerMenu to minimize Calibre after it loaded but that has stopped now. I suspect the window name being "Calibre || Calibre Library" has confused PowerMenu....

Well, how do you start calibre-portable with a command-line option?
I believe the PortableApps.com infrastructure allows you to add command-line options to their apps via a per-app INI file somewhere... See the calibrePortable Dev Test launcher. |

Nope you've lost me. I dont think Calibre Portable IS in PortableApps.com format. Otherwise there would be an INI I could amend and it would probably be listed on PortableApps.com
I can see no options for launching Calibre-portable either |

I think the problem might be related to this being Calibre Portable? |

What happens if you check Preferences->Look Feel->Enable system tray icon, and start portable with the --start in tray option from a short cut file that has Properties->Shortcut->Run set to Minimised. I 'think' that ought to work - I'm reluctant to test it because a) I'm on Win 10 and b) I have a problem that makes me reluctant to do anything windows-wise until I can do an Win 10 inline reinstall BR |

@BetterRed, I don't know if the calibe-portable.exe launcher passes CLI switches.
I don't know if it doesn't either I've never tried. But @Methanoid, you are wrong when you say there is no PortableApps.com launcher for calibre. It is just not on the main apps page, because it is "experimental". What that really means is calibre is updated weekly and they have no time to keep it up to date. http://portableapps.com/node/20518 It copies the binaries for the App\Calibre folder from the "official" Calibre Portable, and updates from it as well. Not exactly production-ready for the Portable App Directory. ... ... Now, I would like if Calibre Portable were in PA.com format, because they have put a lot of effort into creating a powerful and standardized format, and there is no need to reinvent the wheel. Maybe calibre could collaborate with PA.com the way LibreOffice does, but then again lots of GPL software is portableized and still only LibreOffice collaborates on it... Maybe it doesn't - I just tried it with '--no-plugins' but the plugins were still there - but I don't trust this system.
The Win10 ISO has finished downloading so I can do the inline reinstall. MS touts a push button Windows Refresh - that wants to remove everything else seems that File Hippo has calibre 2.43. BR |

All calibre-protable.exe does is set a few environment variables and run calibre.exe. If you want to pass extra command line arguments to calibre.exe, simply write your own batch file to replace calibre-portable.exe
See the heavily commented calibre-portable.bat in the resources subdirectory of the calibre source tree for an example. I could probably have calibre-portable.exe pass command line args to calibre.exe, except that command line processing on windows is such a pain, that I am reluctant to spend the time on it. |
