Ghostland by Duncan Ralston is $0.99 at Amazon US. I've looked at this one a few times, but honestly, it sounded silly to me. But now it and its sequel at $0.99 a piece. I'll take a gamble.

Quote:
People are dying to get in. The ghosts will kill to get out.

Former best friends and gaming partners Ben Laramie and Lilian Roth attend Ghostland on opening day, eager to experience all the thrills and chills the haunted theme park has to offer.

The hologram of deceased horror author Rex Garrote hosts Ghostland's hundreds of haunted buildings and cursed objects. AR headsets allow guests to see the ghosts, and the "Recurrence Field" protects them from harm.

When a computer virus sets the ghosts free and the park goes into lockdown, Ben and Lilian find themselves trapped in an endless nightmare.

With time running short and the dead quickly outnumbering the living, Ben and Lilian must tap into their knowledge of horror and video games to escape… or become Ghostland's newest exhibits.

And hey, there's a short prequel that is FREE.

The Moving House by Duncan Ralston

Quote:
The chilling prequel to GHOSTLAND.

Garrote House has seen its share of blood. Since Christopher's ancestor Oliver Hedgewood built the house in the 1800s, many spirits have taken up residence in "the Moving House," including horror author Rex Garrote, who'd burned to death in his private library. Christopher Hedgewood and Sara Jane Amblin, inventor of the Recurrence Field, return to Garrote House one final time before it's relocated to Ghostland.

They've both witnessed its ghosts many times. But neither of them have come at night, when the Moving House's most dangerous hauntings come alive.

This one is seriously creepy. Three women call up Dickens' ghosts in a seance for fun and get an unexpected result.

Ramsey Campbell's Solomon Kane novelization is $1.99 at Amazon US.

Quote:
Solomon Kane is a sixteenth century anti-hero created by renowned sword and sorcery author Robert E Howard (creator of Conan the Barbarian).

When Solomon Kane meets the Devil's Reaper, he postpones his fate by renouncing violence - a vow that is soon tested by the forces of evil. Compelled to once again strap on his weapons, he embarks on an epic journey of redemption.

NOS4A2 by Joe Hill
Amazon US $1.99

Quote:
Victoria McQueen has an uncanny knack for finding things: a misplaced bracelet, a missing photograph, answers to unanswerable questions. When she rides her bicycle over the rickety old covered bridge in the woods near her house, she always emerges in the places she needs to be.

Charles Talent Manx has a gift of his own. He likes to take children for rides in his 1938 Rolls-Royce Wraith with the vanity plate NOS4A2. In the Wraith, he and his innocent guests can slip out of the everyday world and onto hidden roads that lead to an astonishing playground of amusements he calls Christmasland. The journey across the highway of Charlie's twisted imagination transforms his precious passengers, leaving them as terrifying and unstoppable as their benefactor.

Then comes the day when Vic goes looking for trouble...and finds her way to Charlie. That was a lifetime ago. Now, the only kid ever to escape Charlie's evil is all grown up and desperate to forget. But Charlie Manx hasn't stopped thinking about Victoria McQueen. On the road again, he won't slow down until he's taken his revenge. He's after something very special—something Vic can never replace.

As a life-and-death battle of wills builds, Vic McQueen prepares to destroy Charlie once and for all—or die trying.

Demons by Daylight by Ramsey Campbell is FREE at Amazon US.

This book was a big deal for Ramsey. It was where he felt he had moved out of Lovecraft's shadow, which loomed over his earlier work.

Quote:
Ramsey Campbell, known for his Lovecraftian mastery of the horror-fiction genre, presents a collection of short stories and supernatural tales set in the disconcerting world of what seems like our reality.

But there familiarity stops dead, changing into the terror of the unknown, the unreal... exploring uncharted recesses of the mind. It is this terrifying juxtaposition of fact and fantasy that throws doubt even on one’s own sanity, leaving the reader wondering.

Rooted in the haunts and byways of London and Liverpool, his tales are peopled with the restless youth of today, the atmosphere of today’s world. It’s this uncanny element that makes his stories so captivating and spine-chilling.

But these familiar elements of life give way to the unknown: Demonic rites, psychotic disorders, the possession of powers way beyond the boundaries of understanding - Campbell searches the far reaches of the mind and the reader will not easily forget the sights and sounds, the feelings and hints, the true horror of all that he reveals.

Demons by Daylight is a gripping collection of supernatural horror thriller tales from visionary author Ramsey Campbell.

The Bazaar of Bad Dreams: Stories by Stephen King is $2.99 at Amazon US.

Quote:
For more than thirty-five years, Stephen King has dazzled readers with his genius as a writer of short fiction. In this new collection he introduces each story with a passage about its origins or his motivations for writing it.

There are thrilling connections between stories; themes of morality, the afterlife, guilt, what we would do differently if we could see into the future or correct the mistakes of the past. In “Afterlife,” a man who died of colon cancer keeps reliving the same life, repeating his mistakes over and over again. Several stories feature characters at the end of life, revisiting their crimes and misdemeanors. Others address what happens when someone discovers that he has supernatural powers—the columnist who kills people by writing their obituaries in “Obits;” the old judge in “The Dune” who, as a boy, canoed to a deserted island and saw names written in the sand, people who then died in freak accidents. In “Morality,” King looks at how a marriage and two lives fall apart after the wife and husband enter into what seems, at first, a devil’s pact they can win.

“I made these stories especially for you,” says King. “Feel free to examine them, but please be careful. The best of them have teeth.”
On Writing: A Memoir Of The Craft by Stephen King is $2.99 at Amazon US.

Quote:
Short and snappy as it is, Stephen King's On Writing really contains two books: a fondly sardonic autobiography and a tough-love lesson for aspiring novelists. The memoir is terrific stuff, a vivid description of how a writer grew out of a misbehaving kid. You're right there with the young author as he's tormented by poison ivy, gas-passing babysitters, uptight schoolmarms, and a laundry job nastier than Jack London's. It's a ripping yarn that casts a sharp light on his fiction. This was a child who dug Yvette Vickers from Attack of the Giant Leeches, not Sandra Dee. "I wanted monsters that ate whole cities, radioactive corpses that came out of the ocean and ate surfers, and girls in black bras who looked like trailer trash." But massive reading on all literary levels was a craving just as crucial, and soon King was the published author of "I Was a Teen-Age Graverobber." As a young adult raising a family in a trailer, King started a story inspired by his stint as a janitor cleaning a high-school girls locker room. He crumpled it up, but his writer wife retrieved it from the trash, and using her advice about the girl milieu and his own memories of two reviled teenage classmates who died young, he came up with Carrie. King gives us lots of revelations about his life and work. The kidnapper character in Misery, the mind-possessing monsters in The Tommyknockers, and the haunting of the blocked writer in The Shining symbolized his cocaine and booze addiction (overcome thanks to his wife's intervention, which he describes). "There's one novel, Cujo, that I barely remember writing."

King also evokes his college days and his recovery from the van crash that nearly killed him, but the focus is always on what it all means to the craft. He gives you a whole writer's "tool kit": a reading list, writing assignments, a corrected story, and nuts-and-bolts advice on dollars and cents, plot and character, the basic building block of the paragraph, and literary models. He shows what you can learn from H.P. Lovecraft's arcane vocabulary, Hemingway's leanness, Grisham's authenticity, Richard Dooling's artful obscenity, Jonathan Kellerman's sentence fragments. He explains why Hart's War is a great story marred by a tin ear for dialogue, and how Elmore Leonard's Be Cool could be the antidote.
Stevie King price drops in the US are rare, so get 'em while the getting's good.

Ghoul - Marc Alexander

Another Lume freebie. Originally published in 1980 under the name Mark Ronson.

amazon.co.uk | amazon.com | amazon.ca

Quote:
Twenty-five centuries after its entrance was sealed, an ancient tomb in the fearsome Valley of the Jinn has been uncovered by an earthquake.

Soon afterwards a nearby graveyard is desecrated, and horribly mauled bodies are found.

The mutilation is assumed to be the work of wild beasts, and no one dreams that the archaeologists opening the tomb are moving into terrible danger.

But they will soon learn how wrong they are…

Lurking in the maze of tunnels and caves is a foul creature whose evil has survived for thousands of years, its age-old hunger newly awakened. Only a legendary piece of treasure has the power to protect them…

Will they make it out of the tomb alive?

Or will the Ghoul add more corpses to its tomb of dead trophies?

Me, too. Got it in 2016. I may even read it some day!

(I've actually read a number of these stories over the years. Also, they're in some of his other collections.)
