Hi DNSB,

Thank you for your opinion. I'm aware of calibre's folder structure, the plugin does not challenge the current folder structure rather it adapts to its constraints. I agree that this plugin is not for everybody but for those who like to use file explorers to view their books. The example shows you group books by genre, and you preserve the author's name by using the plugin. and of course its not for everybody.

in the calibre database folder you will have folder calibre-books instead of the author name. its one solution for those who like to use windows file explorer to view their books.

A plugin as suggested would entail moving every file of every book into a new set of author and book folders whenever it was used. Whilst the moves would be done via the creation and destruction of hardlinks it would still be slow and fraught with danger if anything should go awry. You'd probably want to make sure you did a library backup before using it.

Have you tried flattening the calibre library folder via the File Explorer Library (FEL) feature. You may have to enable it. A FEL does not change the existing folder structure, it presents a different view of the same data. A FEL is nowhere near as flexible as a calibre library, but it does have its uses. And, they are 'set and forget', so once a FEL is defined all adds, changes and deletes to the underlying real folders are immediately reflected.

I have a couple FELs that include my calibre libraries, and I've not noticed any effect on calibre performance.

Some File Explorer replacements have Virtual Folders, e.g. FileBoss and Directory Opus - that's as much as I know about them

BR

Umm... you want to rename the directories in the calibre library in a non-standard fashion. That pretty much fits the definition of not supported.

I will have to admit that I can't see the advantage of having a directory called calibre-ebook instead of "Eric Flint" in terms of using Windows Explorer to browse your calibre library. You also did not mention genre in your original message. For what it's worth, given the search tools in calibre, worrying about directory structure is so 1980s. Search and sort by almost any information you felt like placing in your calibre library. Search for books in a series where the books are written by multiple authors? No problem. Search for all books tagged as "gun porn"? No problem. Search for all books written by H. Beam Piper with a tag of paratime? Again, no problem.

BTW, you do realize that when you change an author name, calibre moves the book directories under that author name into a directory under the new author name. So when you run your plugin, using my sample author name, the book directories will move from "Eric Flint" to "calibre-ebook". Now run your plugin again for another author and you will end up with multiple authors' books stuffed into the same directory in your calibre library. Are you planning for your plugin to maintain a database of it's own to keep track of the how the eggs were scrambled.

I think that is the point, to get calibre to put all of the books (actually all of the book folders) into a single folder on disk.

(That does not seem very useful to me.)

translator plugin. It would be good to have a plugin that can translate books that we have in caliber that links to some Google translator-style online translator or any other. What do you think or does something similar already exist?

Save to disk with a template would be useful there without mucking with the calibre library structure.

That would be great. I‘m using Crow Translate for now, with the extra benefit of text to speech support. It works great, but a translation plugin would be even better

@BR Thank you BetterRed, I will check out the File Explorer Libraries. I think I might have a use for this. Thank you for sharing it.

@DNSB
Its very useful to me as I also use calibre to manage personal documents mostly pdfs of receipts, bills. These are all added to calibre automagically using the auto import function - example
title 20200315 Water Company
author: water bills

then sync to dropbox. Another use case is adding pdf of websites, I add them based on their genre
example: title: How I use calibre
author: calibre-ebooks.

On dropbox I can quickly find the folders if i need to. I can even archive the old/read documents using "copy to library" function -> archive.

Another plugin idea, OCR cover photo or reverse search in google images to extract metadata.

Hopefully in the right place to ask!

I searched the available plug-ins and 1st page of this thread so I hope I'm not duplicating!
It would be great to have an ASIN plugin to be able to search books on Goodreads from my Kindle
Because I buy from different sources, my only full library is Calibre. So when I sideload my books from it to my Kindle, the ASIN doesn't match rendering my GR option on my Kindle unusable.
Thank you in advance for your consideration!

Does the support for highlighting in 5.x open the door for a plugin to support the importing of amazon *.phl files (public highlights)?

Update to old APNX Generator to Mobi and KF8 formats

I would like to see a spiritual successor to the old APNX generator, since the tutorials I saw on the internet did not work and it is very irritating for me to use locations when I am reading an ebook, due to the fact that I am systematic.
As I have a huge digital library, using the KFX format is not feasible for me, at least, for now, so this suggestion.

Lol! I have so many icon rules. Rules that show up in their own dedicated columns. One for Goodreads (read, to be read, unfinsihed, etc), one for the book source (library, Amazon, Smashwords, Author Website, paperback), one for the read status - just the same as the one for Goodreads, just so that I am sure that what I have in Goodreads matches the ones in the booklist, I have icons next to my dates so that I know if they have the original file name as created by the get file name plugin, I have columns indicating if the comments of the books have been set a specific way (I copy over multiple columns into the comments so the book jackets and catalogs have better info).

So, yes I use columns. I wanted to have the changes in background because I also use the color rules to indicate if there is a book wihout a format, but does have a source (indicating a lost file), but I didn't want to use another icon for it, and have just resorted to changing the text color.

Now that I know the reasons why the background rules can't be made, I know not to ask again.

Thanks!

I would like to see a bot that will select the second or third(variable) page of a PDF for the cover. Magazines will often have ads as the first page and I have to go in and select the second page. It would be great if this was automated.

My current method is to put the offending PDF in their own library, then run a batch PDF tool to erase the first page. Cumbersome.
