i found the writing style of clan of the cave bear very heavy going - i actually gave up and moved onto something i enjoyed more. this book is actually much more readable for me.

I have occasionally referred to my book jokingly as "Clan of the Cave Bear meets the Once and Future King." Actually it's about 2% Cave Bear, in that it's a story with a strong central female character. That is, in fact, the only thing it has in common with Cave Bear, but when Clan of the Cave Bear came out, there were hardly any books with strong central female characters, which was why it was such a hit with women. Finally! A story about us! Us as central characters! Not just helpmeets and handmaidens!

If anyone remembers The Once and Future King, this modern retelling of the King Arthur story spawned the whole Camelot thing of the 1960s. I thought it was about time we had a hero's journey story with a female hero. My website goes into some detail about the themes of the book.

I'm about 3/4 of the way through this, and enjoying it very much. Any estimate of when books 2 and 3 will be available as e-books?

Book III:

Has anyone read book 2 or 3? Looking for reviews as I usually don't spend quite so much on anything but my very favorite authors, but I liked the first one quite a bit and so I'm tempted.

Catherine, if you read this. Are the Kindle versions DRM free or did you DRM them?

Books II and III are a continuation of the story begun in Book I, so if you liked the first one, you'll probably like the others.

The Kindle versions are only downloadable to a Kindle or to an Amazon account that has Kindle registered to it. Amazon applies the DRM, if there is any, but they can only be read on a Kindle. I just uploaded Adobe eReader versions, and they are starting to appear in ebookstores. They are distributed through Lightning Source, so they do have DRM. I don't really know how that works, but I think you can download the file to one device. There's a link to one of the ebookstores that is offering them here:

You specify if you want DRM or not when you put them up, at least according to Amazon. (Without DRM they're just like standard non-DRM mobipocket files and can be read on something else if say you get a new device that's not a Kindle).

If you give them a MOBI with DRM, then the Kindle version will be DRM. Otherwise, it won't have DRM.

When Women Were Warriors now in mobi format

Hi again,

I just uploaded all 3 books of the trilogy, When Women Were Warriors, to mobipocket. They're available now from the mobipocket store, and should be available soon from other ebook stores that sell mobi books.

There's a link to the mobipocket store versions here:
http://www.shieldmaidenpress.com/buy.html

And I still have Book I available as a free download:

Unfortunately my books won't appear on Fictionwise.
Their policy is to carry only books published by publishers with 25 or more titles, which means small publishers just starting out can't list their books there.

Here's their policy information:
