Arthurian mythology is a fun slippery slope. Once you read either, you will want to read the other. Then another. Finally you end up with a bookshelf full and proudly brag that you own the Arthurian Encyclopedia, even if you can no longer see the words. Then you re-collect them in epub. You translate some tales painfully and slowly from Old French. You take university courses on the historical Arthur and write a paper on Geoffrey of Monmouth. And then you get really intense. Or was that just me?
Wait what was the question? |

Any votes here for Victor Canning's work? "The Crimson Chalice", "The Circle of the Gods" and "The Immortal Wound". It's been a long while since I read them but I seem to remember them being a rather more gritty variation of the theme, certainly they appealed to me more than many other attempts (not that I've ever considered "Morte d'Arthur").

Surprised that no one's mentioned Marion Zimmer Bradley's The Mists of Avalon.

I just wanted to point out that the first three "books" of The Once and Future King (The Sword and the Stone, The Witch in the Wood and The Ill-Made Knight) were originally published separately and only when the fourth part was finished were they edited and published together as The Once and Future King.
The first part, The Sword in the Stone, is the only one is still available separately and it's worth reading even if you've read it in the larger book. A lot of scenes were edited out and new scenes written like Merlin's battle with Madame Mim and the goose scenes. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Swo...#The_revisions |

And the prequel, The Forest House. Yep, i had them on the shelf also. But those are not strictly about Arthur, you know? They are terrific, but a long long way from Tennyson. He built a framework for all of the following generations of writers to hang their stories on.

I didn't really care for The Mist of Avalon, but by that time I was suffering from Arthurian fatigue. There was an Arthur book by one of Tolstoy's relatives which came out about that time that I didn't read for the same reason.

Thought this might be of interest to others enamored with the legend of King Arthur. In Search of Myths and Heroes - King Arthur. Nice factual history of how the legend came into being. The BBC produced video for this program can be found on the Internet, or so I am led to believe.

It's not my favorite book, but I didn't get that out of it.
