Leroux, Gaston: The Mystery of the Yellow Room (illus). v1. 31 Oct 2021

The first of the adventures of young reporter and amateur sleuth Joseph Rouletabille (his nickname means literally roule ta bille, or “Roll your marble”; French slang for “Globetrotter,” one who has been around and seen it all). The mystery concerns a complex, and seemingly impossible, crime. Mlle. Stangerson is viciously attacked in her bedchamber, and the criminal has vanished from the locked room. Rouletabille and his friend M. Sainclair set out to solve the puzzle. Leroux provides detailed diagrams illustrating the crime scene to aid the reader in the intellectual challenge.

One of the first locked-room mystery novels, it was first published serially in France in the periodical L’Illustration in 1907, then in book form in 1908. It has been hailed as one of the top locked-room mysteries of all time, and garnered praise from top mystery writers such as John Dickson Carr and Agatha Christie.

=============
Gaston Louis Alfred Leroux (6 May 1868 – 15 April 1927) was a French journalist and author of detective fiction. In the English-speaking world, he is best known for writing the novel The Phantom of the Opera (Le Fantôme de l’Opéra, 1910), which has been made into several film and stage productions of the same name, notably the 1925 film starring Lon Chaney, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s 1986 musical, and Joel Schumacher’s 2004 film based on the musical. Leroux’s 1907 novel The Mystery of the Yellow Room is one of the most celebrated locked room mysteries. Leroux's contribution to French detective fiction is considered a parallel to those of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in the United Kingdom and Edgar Allan Poe in the United States.
