Free (Kindle DRM-free) Eldridge Conspiracy by Stephen Berry [Military Technothriller]
Something slightly different for the KDP Select exclusive-or-else-but-you-get-5-free-days-out-of-90-which-allow-people-to-ignore-your-freebie-offering-because-there-are-so-many-other-freebie-offerings slushpile.
Stephen Ames Berry is indeed an ISFDBed MilSF writer, and he does indeed have a previously-published freebie backlist MilSF book on offer, but that's not what's actually what's free as part of KDP right now. His apparently non-overtly sf military conspiracy technothriller is the one that got KDP Select exclusivized, and since he's been generous enough to still keep his actual sfnal military alien invasion thriller free to all via Smashwords (sequels priced reasonably, as well), I figure he might as well get the feature nod for a day I'd otherwise skip since I have continuing finals next week and there's really not much worth looking at. First, the actual backlist freebie: The Biofab War by Stephen Ames Berry (ISFDB) is one of those plucky Earthman fends off alien space invaders tales, originally published by Ace Books in 1984. This is free to everyone around the world in the format of your choice via direct download @ Smashwords. The sequels, also published by Ace, are available for just $2.99 via Smashwords and distributing outlets, and possibly Berry may offer discount coupons during Read an E-Book Week or other Smashwords sale. Description Earth’s been invaded, and nobody knows it but Ex-CIA agent John Harrison and his partner Zahava. Invaded by biofabs—the Scotar—a diabolically crafted life form dedicated to turning mankind into either supper or shuffling brainwipes. All seems lost as the pair go down under a wave of Scotar warriors--until the battleship Implacable appears. Fighting rages as mankind's survival hangs in the balance. The Eldridge Conspiracy is a military conspiracy technothriller about one of those super-thingy sorts of experiments, based in part on Ames' own experiences in the Pentagon. This appears to be a newly-written novel. Free without DRM for who knows how long @ Amazon main UK DE ES FR IT Description 1943: The destroyer USS Eldridge vanishes during the Philadelphia Experiment. The ship invisibility project ends. Nuremberg, 1946: Nazi death camp doctor Martin von Kemnitz is hung. The Pentagon, 1999: A dying hand gifts Angie Milano and Jim Munroe with the deadly legacy that is the Eldridge Roster, the long-lost crew list of the Philadelphia Experiment. The two are soon on the run from the vicious killers sent for the roster. Without it, Project Telemachus, perversion of a wondrous meld of genetics and physics, will fail. And mankind may survive. As the conspiracy unfolds, Jim and Angie go on the attack, gathering strength from each other as they battle Telemachus and the undying evil at its heart. Old foes of Telemachus, allies with very Different skills, join them. But only by together mastering the secret torments of their pasts can Jim and Angie defeat the Project and crush the dream of its brilliant, diabolical architect. All allegiances unmasked, all powers unleashed, battle is joined as Project Telemachus launches its final experiment, its success signaling humanity's brief but anguished twilight. ISFDBed William King repeats his steampunky sword & sorcery adventure tale, which you might have missed because it was a late suggestion by fellow MR member Blue Tyson last time it appeared: Sky Pirates And that's it for the parts of the slushpile which I bothered to look at, though I'll note that there are some reasonably significant backlist repeats from Lee Killough, Robert W. Walker, Crossroad Press, and small imprints which have a mix of new and backlist authors and are offering some new stuff today include Books We Love/BWLPP, Stay Thirsty Media, and Mainly Murder Press. Happy reading, if you happen to enjoy plucky Earthmen fending off alien invaders, or military super-thingy conspiracies. Last edited by ATDrake; 04-22-2012 at 02:49 PM.
