I'll nominate yet another book that's sure to please... Let's have a round of applause for...The Book of Fate by Brad Meltzer. Reading the description may make you want to read it now instead of waiting for it to win.

Quote:
In six minutes, one of us would be dead. None of us knew it was coming...

So says Wes Holloway, a once-cocky and ambitious presidential aide, about the day that changed his life forever. On that Fourth of July, Wes put Ron Boyle, the chief executive's oldest friend, into the presidential limousine. By the time the trip came to an end, Wes was permanently disfigured, and Boyle was dead, the victim of a crazed assassin.

Eight years later, Boyle is spotted, alive and well, in Malaysia. In that moment, Wes has the chance to undo the worst day of his life. Trying to figure out what really happened takes Wes back to a decade old presidential crossword puzzle, mysterious facts buried in Masonic history, and a two-hundred-year-old code invented by Thomas Jefferson.

But what Wes doesn't realize is that The Book of Fate holds everyone's secrets. Especially the ones worth dying for. The Book of Fate. What does it say about you?

That doesn't fit into this month's theme at all. It sounds like a common, garden-variety thriller.

No, not really. I'm sure Jon knew it was a provocative post. We can all give as well as take.

Vandy, I would love for you to continue keeping track of the nominations, as long as you continue to want to.

On a separate note, it is much easier to double-check someone's work than to do the original work. That said, there are now four votes each for Ulysses, The Magic Mountain and Don Quixote.

I'm most interested in The Magic Mountain, but I doubt I'd be able to get my hands on it, so I'll have to give that a pass.

I recently failed to complete Midnight's Children so I'll just use a single nomination to 5th Midnight's Children. Maybe I can try it again.

The Magic Mountain was first published in 1924. So it's not in PD in the US.

Thomas Mann died in 1955. It is in PD in the life+50 countries such as Canada, Japan and Taiwan.

It's not PD in Australia either as only deaths prior to 1955 are in PD.

thanks FBone - what I thought is the original German version, having been published in 1924, was indeed in the public domain, but the translation in English wasn't. The translation was commissioned by the US distributor. So I thought that whether or not it is public domain in the UK (where I am) depends on whether the tranlsation is considered of sufficient originality to be entitled to coyright, too (well, my copyright info source is this document).
Now as the file I have states
Quote:
Copyright 1927 by Alfred A. Knopf, Inc.
Copyright renewed 1955 by Alfred A. Knopf, Inc.
Copyright 1952 by Thomas Mann
I guessed it was not public domain. But if I got it wrong, and you think this is public domain in Canada, would it be legitimate if I uploaded the EPUB version on the site? Thanks for your help!

Just looking at the list of books this month and noticed that Mr. Rushdie's name is misspelled. Salman Rushdie, not Salmon Rushdie. Not a big deal, but still...
