World's first laser TV may lead to the end of plasma TVs

It may not be mobile computing news, but we're always up for a new display technology. According to Afterdawn, "Australian firm Arasor International and its US partner Novalux have unveiled what they see as the next revolution in visual technology - the world's first laser television which is poised to be half the price, twice as good, and consume a fraction of the electricity of conventional plasma and LCD TVs."

It is expected to be available at the end of next year, and cost less than $1000, but the screen size wasn't mentioned. Chief executive of Novalux, Jean-Michel Pelaprat, was quoted as saying it will be strong in the larger-than-40" television market. "All of a sudden what you see is a lifelike image on display. Combine that with energy efficiency, price advantage and the fact that the laser TVs will be half the weight and depth of plasma TVs, and... plasma is now something of the past."

Thanks to Joe B. for the tip.

This review has some more technical type details.

And a mention of SED televisions, which I've had my eye on for longer than e-ink!

The laser one sounds great, as they're targeting the SED for 50"+ and I've already decided that my life isn't TV-centric enough to warrent more than about a 42" inch screen.

I hope they make their time-frame, though, the SED has been "scheduled" for release every year (almost every quarter) for about the past 3.5 years.

Excerpt from a [http://www.redherring.com/Article.as...+Screen%3F]Red Herring[/URL] write up.
Quote:
Aside from Mitsubishi, other TV makers who have announced plans to make laser TVs include Samsung. Mr. Niven declined to name other customers. Attendees of the upcoming International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in January will see 10 brands of laser TVs on display, he added.

Here's Arasor's site, they've got a really big (17.1Mb) mpeg of the unveiling under news releases.

Interesting... the CNET Asia article says "Similar light engines are also being developed for use in mobile phones, camcorders, PDAs, PCs and car windshield displays."

Maybe we'll finally get a HUD spedometer like they've been predicting for, well, ever.

Sounds like great news... as much as I sympathize with anyone who wants a nice, big TV, the energy-wastage of plasmas makes me ill, and I'd already decided never to get one. If this comes down in price to that below plasmas and LCDs, and uses less energy to boot, sign me up!

Tell me. I'd also prefer a more "wallet-friendly" option.
