Nook sold out
I just read at Engadget that the Nook is sold out for pre-christmas deliveries. You can still pre-order for the next batch due to ship January 4th.
Ok, let the "fake shortage" conspiracy theories begin. BOb |

I don't think so. I truly think they underestimated how easy it would be to sucker folks like me by offering us a pretty LED color touch screen for navigation.

Brings back memories of Kindles first season.
It was sold out from mid November until May. |

I don't think its a "fake" shortage...they probably (quite understandably) were reluctant to commit to a full manufacturing schedule with their first product, without knowing what the real demand for the product would be.

Apparently this is a true shortage. And it makes sense: this is the biggest shopping season in the year. Why would B&N "create" a shortage of a popular item during the time of the year that it's in the highest demand?
There is an illuminating post about this on the New York Times's "Bits" blog. They quote an analyst as saying that B&N and Sony rushed the announcements of their respective wireless devices. The companies announced the products well before they were ready, in order to show that they could compete. I found the follow-up quote from Amazon particularly amusing. I, too, found them amusing but probably for a different reason. The one thing we don;t really know is whether there are plenty of Kindles in stock because people saw the nook, compared it to the Kindle, and decided they would be embarassed to be seen with something that looked like the Kindle or because Amazon finally did guess accurately the number of people who will buy a Kindle this holiday season.

Maybe the producers just had such a low expectation of their product that they only made five units. All five have now been secretly bought by their moms.

Ha, hardly a dig. Amazon just can't let anyone else have any positive press on what they (wrongly) view as their turf.
As though the Kindle wasn't in short supply, too, when it was first introduced. New, 'cool' tech nearly always launches to short supply. Yawn. Next story, please. (OK, I admit it, I stood in line for a Wii. I was younger then.) |

Darn, I was really looking forward to getting it for my Mom, considering how often she spends time at B&N.
Oh well, I guess she won't mind waiting a week or two :X |

nook.....lowercase.....not Nook. but nook. the logo says nook. it's a nook. it's not a Nook. if they wanted to call it a Nook, they would haved spelled it with a capital N. they didn't. it's a nook. how long before the true names is used in print? SMILE: don't hold your breath. Everyone's doing it the wrong way, and always will. But it's really called a nook. lowercase n. ask barnes and noble

I've been to a couple of Barnes & Noble stores here in Los Angeles and they have a booth set-up for the Nook right when you walk in the door. In front of all the books!
