Are the gods sending me a message?
I ordered a Sony Reader three weeks ago from BooksonBoard. Although the website showed it in stock, an inventory glitch left them one short on their blue readers meaning mine became backordered. I was told last week that a shipment was due in last Friday and that my Reader would be overnighted due to the unexpected delay.
Now they are telling me that the Friday shipment did not have any blue readers and they are waiting for a new delivery date from Sony. Now, this company has been very responsive and has offered to substitute a different color or cancel the order (it has already been billed to my credit card.) As a CPA in the middle of tax season, I don't have a lot of spare time so I have not been particularly inconvenienced by the delay. I have to wonder if maybe I was meant to be a Kindle owner instead. The reason I chose the Reader over the Kindle was twofold. First, I've actually held a Reader at a retail store and drooled over them for two years so I have this "connection." Second is the fact that I am a library-aholic. I was under the impression that you couldn't download library ebooks to a Kindle. However, as I browse this site, I see references to library books on the Kindle. Can I read library books on a Kindle? Should I take the unusual delay as a sign? |

Yes it's a Sign, it's testing your faith to see if you're worthy of a Sony.

Both the Sony and Kindle can read library book. The Sony reads pdfs and the Kindle reads mobipocket. I believe most libraries have more pdf than mobi but definitely check with the library you plan to use.

Well, it's a trickier question than you might imagine. It is technically possible to read library books on a Kindle. However, I have the distinct impression that Amazon believes it has the right to control the user's access to content viewed on the Kindle. To me, that means, that if Amazon decides to do so, it can and will prosecute any user that views any content that was not placed on the Kindle by Amazon. I've always been a HUGE Amazon fan in the past, but that they should even think about playing Big Brother to this extent makes me think you should be patient and wait for a Sony Reader. That is, until Sony starts telling their users that they have a right to control access to content viewed on Sony devices. |

If you do remove DRM from library books, please obey at least the spirit of their rules and delete them when you're done. Even if you don't, please please please pretty please don't distribute them. |

I just got a Kindle 1 because I read here that it could read library Mobipocket books. It can, but you have to run them through some scripts to make them Kindle-compatible.
Although I'm a technical person I find this to be a hassle. I'd prefer just to check out the library e-books and put them directly on my reader without mucking around with python scripts. I do stuff like that all day at work and I'd prefer to leave it at work. My library, and maybe yours, also offers a lot more PDF books (=Sony) than Mobipocket (=Kindle with hassles). You might check that out before you 'decide.' I'm happy with the Kindle nevertheless, and I'm also looking forward to wirelessly buying the occasional e-book from Amazon's vast library. I also think blue is the best Sony color Greg. |
