The Holy War against piracy is not about money, nor aboout copies being paid.
It's all about control. And AFAIK, majors/publishers are willing to give up a few sales to gain a complete control over the circulation of ideas. ;-) |

IMO, the grain of truth here is those who pirate heavily are often music enthusiasts (the other common choice is 'file collector'). They would buy even more music if piracy was not an option. Population skew.

People who pirate a lot of music also buy a lot of music. Therefore, they buy more music because they pirate music. That's a relationship that needs to be proven - it cannot be deduced as a logical inference. |

No matter how much they spend, I doubt it compares to the amount that can potentially be extracted from them over the short term in damages.

Nowhere in the link provided do I see a claim that people buy more music because they pirate it. What makes you believe that the researchers have drawn this inference?

No, but you can say that it is false to claim that downloading music lead to that you buy less music than people not downloading music.

I think that all you can really say is that people who like music probably buy it, and people who don't like music will neither pirate it nor buy it. And that's really pretty obvious .

No you can say exactly what I said also. It is trivially true from the study and not obvious.
