Post [SOLVED] ONYX BOOX Note - should I buy it?

Hi,
This is probably most frequent question.
Will it fit my need - Note model.
On daily basis I read on Kindle Paperwhite II and I'm happy with it.
However, my Safari Books account is gathering dust. I would like to read it also in transit and bus. Fast tablet cost almost as much as this Note model.
However, Note doesn't have backlight.
So to conclude:
  1. Safari books app (Android has it)
  2. comfortable reading (solved by eInk)
  3. sturdy or robust, so it won't easily break - i'm not planing to break it on purpose. Oberon cover on my Kindle is almost perfect protection) I would likely some cover with thin like metal plate on back/front.

PS: I've got some experience with big eReaders - Onyx Black Pearl M92 was with me for more then a year. It died with unexpected screen freeze (bed time reading and morning eReader death).

I am really enjoying my Onyx Note. I haven't switched on my Kobo Aura One or original Kobo Aura in months. The Note is now my go to device for reading.

However, it does still have bugs. It crashes on me regularly, but so did my Kobo Aura One. I suspect that this may have to do with my frequent use of the dictionary. Although a bit of an annoyance, it is not a huge issue for me as I expect it to happen and can work around it.

The ability to run other apps on this device and the ability to take notes and sketch on it are what helps it to surpass my Kobo Aura One. The larger screen size also helps.

Will you like this device as much as I do?

Don't know. So long as you are aware of its limitations, it might meet your needs. It does mine although I am still hoping that future updates will improve it even more.

My alternative was iPad Mini, price range almost the same.
So choice wasn't really a choice between what, but rather should I buy or not

I've gave it a try. ONYX BOOX Note is on the way.

I'm intrigued—how are you reading Kobo books on your Note? The Kobo Android app seems terrible (no way to select left-align; hardly any font choice; no way to change line spacing). Since I love the large screen of the Note, I was actually considering getting a KA1 for fiction reading, and keeping the Note for pdfs and academic reading. But I really can't justify the cost of two devices (three including the GloHD)! It seems you have a better solution for reading Kobo books on the Note. Do you have to strip the DRM and then convert them to epub to read then in Neo2?

Bingo. Very easily done, even for the technically inept like myself, using Calibre and a plugin. I found some very useful information on Apprentice Alf's website.

I'm very excited with my ONYX Note.
I've read few pages of a PDF document and few chapters of SafariBooks. Tried a little with scribbles and note taking.
Yes, it lacks the front light. I'm so much accustomed to the Kindle PW frontlight that reading on the Note in a bus/tram is a little troublesome.
I don't know how can I make notes during SafariBooks reading as they are separate app. I don't see top bar.
Despite that - I'm in love with this experience.

I've failed with Screen Protector application - due to my clumsiness and lack of experience. I'm not sure if I will needed as I don't make notes (for now). But I'm planning to buy it and let specialist apply it.

PS: I tried to update the thread title to make it more meaningful, but I failed or the forum doesn't allow it.
