You could read it at night but reset your clock so that it is at 10 a.m. Then technically you are reading it in the daytime. Just not in the daytime in your time zone. (Picky picky...)

Oh unadulterated passions are fun. It's adulterated passions that I have problems with. Too many preservatives.

And those stampedes are just the dust bunnies.

Claws by Ozzie Cheek.

Quote:
When twenty-three lions, tigers, and ligers - a giant, hybrid cat - escape in rural Idaho, town officials decide to hold the first safari in America. Only police chief Jackson Hobbs, a man haunted by memories of a tragedy, and Katy Osborne, the sole white female hunting guide in Africa, seem to realize the danger of this decision. With the town desperate for money, Jackson's ex-wife, the mayor, and her boyfriend, a banker, are adamant that the Idaho Lion Hunt go forward even after people are killed. As the deaths mount and his own family is put at risk, Jackson must cope with a town doubled in population, deal with the dangerous cats, uncover the mystery of who engineered their escape, and investigate the activity of a local, anti-government militia. A willful teenage daughter, an animal rescue group, a missing little boy, a dead State Trooper, and Katy's desire to save a rare liger named Kali all add to the complications. Betrayal blossoms alongside romance as the story drives to the final showdown.
I think you should get it while it is free and then decide later if/when you can read it. Or you could start reading it a little bit at night, and then if you get too skeered you can stop.

Omnimystery News is reporting that Simon Hall from Accent Press has a 5-book TV detective series for $2.99 each. http://www.amazon.com/Simon-Hall/e/B...rnid=618072011The first one in the series, The TV Detective is free at iTunes. The author is a BBC crime correspondent.

Quote:
The first book in the TV Dectective crime series by Simon Hall.

The TV Detective finds television reporter Dan Groves newly assigned to the crime beat, and in a state of angst about it. He needs a crash-course in police work; the solution is to shadow Detective Chief Inspector Adam Breen on a high-profile murder inquiry, which doesn't go down well with some members of the police force.

The victim is a notorious local businessman, Edward Bray, a man with so many enemies that one of the problems the inquiry faces is having a surplus of suspects. Bray is killed at a prearranged meeting, in a lay-by on a dark and storm-lashed night, by a blast through the heart from a shotgun. Adam investigates and uncovers a tantalising question, which seems to be at the heart of the case: why was the killing planned for a different day, but put off apparently because the weather was sunny?

Tensions abound between Dan and the police, and he comes close to being thrown off the case - until the detectives come to realise he might actually be helpful, in using the power of television to tempt the murderer into a trap.
Free crime novella- The Storm Without by Tony Black from Blasted Heath.

Quote:
Still recovering from the harrowing case that ended his police career, Doug Michie returns to his boyhood home of Ayr on Scotland’s wind-scarred west coast. He hopes to rebuild his shattered life, get over the recent failure of his marriage and shed his demons, but the years have changed the birthplace of the poet Robert Burns.

When Doug meets an old school-days flame, Lyn, he feels his past may offer the salvation of a future. But Lyn’s son has been accused of murder and she begs Doug to find the truth.

Soon Doug is tangled in a complicated crimeweb of corrupt politicians, frightened journalists and a police force in cahoots with criminals. As he uncovers illicit smuggling activities at the town’s port and falls firmly on the wrong side of eastern European ganglords, the problems he left behind in Ulster are now the least of his worries. Only Burns’ philosophical musings offer Doug some shelter as he wanders the streets of Auld Ayr battling The Storm Without.

THE STORM WITHOUT is a 43,000-word novella, first serialised in the Ayrshire Post.

Katherine John has another freebie from Accent Press that is a standalone and not part of her detective series. By Any Name is free at Apple only.

Quote:
A bloodstained man runs half naked down a motorway at night dodging high-speed traffic — and worse. Cornered by police, admitted to a psychiatric ward suffering from trauma-induced amnesia, all he can recall is a detailed knowledge of sophisticated weaponry and military techniques that indicates a background in terrorism.

When two armed soldiers guarding his room are murdered and Dr. Elizabeth Santer, the psychiatrist assigned to his case, is abducted at gunpoint a desperate hunt begins for a dangerous killer.

Terrorist — murderer — kidnapper — thief whatever he is, he remembers a town in Wales and it is to Brecon he drags Elizabeth Santer with the security forces in all-out pursuit. There, a violent and bloody confrontation exposes a horrifying story of treachery and political cover-up.

Is Elizabeth in the hands of a homicidal terrorist or an innocent pawn? Her life depends on the right answer.

Cold Granite (Logan McRae, Book 1) by Stuart MacBride is free at Kobo and B&N. HarperCollins.

Quote:
Stuart MacBride’s Number One bestselling crime series opens with this award-winning debut. DS Logan McRae and the police in Aberdeen hunt a child killer who stalks the frozen streets.Winter in Aberdeen: murder, mayhem and terrible weather…It’s DS Logan McRae’s first day back on the job after a year off on the sick, and it couldn’t get much worse. Three-year-old David Reid’s body is discovered in a ditch, strangled, mutilated and a long time dead. And he’s only the first. There’s a serial killer stalking the Granite City and the local media are baying for blood.Soon the dead are piling up in the morgue almost as fast as the snow on the streets, and Logan knows time is running out. More children are going missing. More are going to die. And if Logan isn’t careful, he could end up joining them…

Unbelievable. I just downloaded this from B&N, and it has NO INDENTS WHATSOEVER.

I then decided to download it to my computer and ran it through calibre.

Now, no problems.

The Kindle edition has no indents either. Amazon hasn't price matched it yet.

The second book in the series has indents.

Just simply run it through calibre, thus:

1) Open calibre
2) Click on 'Convert books'
3) Select 'Look and Feel'
4) check 'remove spacing between paragraphs' (which will also give you the indent)

This is for a one-time instance.

If you wish to set up calibre to always remove spacing/indent paragraphs before conversion, then the instructions differ.
