Lenovo ThinkBook Plus Twist Announced

I’m surprised that no one has posted about Lenovo’s new combination OLED and Color E-Ink display computer yet. It looks very interesting and I believe it will be the first e-ink screen on a Windows machine.

Check it out here:

Ooh, so close. For my eyesight I think I need a 13" diagonal screen to read A4 PDFs easily without zooming and scrolling and this has a 13.3" OLED but only 12" E-Ink. Of course it also depends heavily on the PPI as well.

$1650, June 2023. Nice device. Lenovo also has an e-ink tablet. I hope this means e-ink screens will become more mainstream.

I do wonder to what extent an e-ink laptop is a niche device. What is the target? Programmers with burned out eyes? How important is for others to have the longer battery life e-ink will offer? And they will be lots of complaints about ghosting and lack of animation. I hope I am wrong and there is a market large enough to support it.

Yes, it will be interesting to see if this generates enough sales to keep it viable for Lenovo.

I give them credit for at least bringing the product to market.

I also wonder how much the battery life will be improved when running the e-ink screen. If you need the front light on most of the time, I can’t see it saving that much battery power.

I think it might appeal to specialists working outdoors (i.e. civil engineers) where visibility in direct sunlight is important; on the other hand, the dual screen design means that one screen is always at risk of damage when the device is closed, making it particularly flimsy for this kind of outdoor work.

I am also thrilled to see eInk screens going more mainstream, but have mixed feelings about the potential for success of this particular device.

Would not recommend. I own a Thinkbook Plus gen 1 device. They abandoned that hardware after a single update (being able to change weather from Celsius to Fahrenheit). I read an article about how the screen could mirror the W10 desktop. When asked on their support forum, they mentioned that they would be supplying an update.

Welp, no update. But their gen 2 device was advertised to do it. This is despite their gen 1 device having been able to do it!!

The actual eink experience is barebones and poor. No backlight. Slow.

I owned a Yoga Book C930 that did receive a fair amount of updates.

I do not trust Lenovo. I’d be wary of this laptop.

I also had a YB 930 and it never quite worked right for reading on the eink screen. Lenovo makes good-looking hardware but they never seem to go the last mile to finish it as a product.

Man, if only they were as good as their ThinkPads...

...oh right, they didn't create the ThinkPad. IBM did.

You're right - and wow were they awesome. I had one about 20+ years ago and that I still remember it well. Had got it used but it still ran great - that pointing stick was a revelation compared to the terrible mechanical mice of the day. When the motherboard failed (since it was used), replacing it took just half an hour. If I stop burning my spare cash on ereaders (I totaled the amount spent the other day and it was sobering), I'll maybe find another old thinkpad to play with again.

For many years a ThinkPad used to be my workhorse: hardly any serious issues. And updates were regularly for about 4-5 years. However, every model had indeed its quirks and Lenovo never solved those permanently. My last model (T460) had ventilator issues: suddenly it would turn into a hairdryer at full speed causing great annoyance with my colleagues because of the accompanying noise. It was a known driver issue related to extended function keys. Never solved, save for some workarounds (delayed starting up drivers). But I would accept one ThinkPad any time, right away. Great machines. The best I had was a ThinkPad X1 Carbon, very light, very powerful.
