This will depend if people have installed Qt themselves or compiled it themselves with Qt's internal translation file on their system in one of the languages supported by Qt and of course their locale settings. So you might get different answers from Linux users and from people who compile Qt themselves.

I suppose that in Windows, no one will have the translated buttons in Sigil.
I mean "normal" users who downloaded the ready installation file.

I understand that compiling on Linux causes the buttons to be naturally added to the qm files and this problem does not exist (although I have never seen it). I'd love to see screenshots.

That's why I'm still thinking about the optimal solution for Windows users.

A half-way would be to add a dozen additional strings to base.ts during pre-building installations for Windows, but I know you do not like this idea.

Unfortunately, I'm leaving for a few days.

Maybe there will be some answers in the poll.

I'm using Windows 7 -in spanish- and Sigil with the GUI also in spanish. In my system, besides the cases you mention, they are not translated the "Save" and "Close" buttons in the Index Editor ("Editar Indice de Contenido" in my Sigil GUI), "Reports" ("Informes") and "Clip Editor" ("Editor de fragmentos"). And the "Ok" buttom in the "Manage Plugins" ("Administrar complementos") also is not translated (should be "Aceptar").

Regards
Rubén

Regardless of their locale settings, Sigil makes no attempt to load the qtbase_XX.qm files. So even on my Linux system with the Qt translation package installed, the dialog in the OP's test failed to translate the buttons. The change I recently pushed to master should handle this. If the translation files are present (where Qt expects them to be), Sigil will load the one that corresponds to Sigil's selected interface language if it can find it. My system "passed the test" when I changed languages after making the change.

A couple of points to note:

1) I'm including the qtbase_xx.qm files that have corresponding sigil_xx.qm entries included in the Windows installer. Package size increase is negligible.

2) I'm only including the translations in the Windows installer that are available in the version of Qt5 that Windows Sigil is built against and ships with (currently Qt5.6.2). So there's really not that many. Many languages still may not see standard Qt message box buttons being translated in the forthcoming release of Sigil.

Spanish is one of the languages for which Qt5.6.2 provides no base (qtbase_es.qm) translation file. Later versions of Qt do. You may have to track down a qtbase_es.qm file from a newer version of Qt5 and manually copy it to Sigil's "translation" folder. This seemed to work for me, but there could be glitches with using translation files that don't match Sigil's Qt version. The only other solution is to wait until Sigil (Windows) updates the version of Qt5 it's built against in some later release (it won't be the forthcoming one).

Thank you.
I admit that this poll was simply to show the problem for @KevinH and @DiapDialer (apart issue 346).

But please consider another solution too.

Only four or five contexts (37 short translations) are missing in the .ts file:
  • QLineEdit
  • QPlatformTheme
  • QMessageBox
  • QWidgetTextControl
  • and optionally QUnicodeControlCharacterMenu (11 short translations)

Including these 37/48 short translations to base.ts makes Sigil's translation from Qt independent.

Spoiler:

In short (unless Kevin convinces me otherwise): no.

Generating Sigil's base.ts file is an automated process. We generate the .ts files, upload to Transifex, wait for translation, download and ultimately ... automatically compile to the various .qm files. Other than running the generation command, translation is basically a hands-off process for us. And I'd like to keep it that way.

I'm sorry, but I'm not really amenable to having to manually diddle (or remember to run an extra process on) base.ts after it's generated to insert a list of non-Sigil strings (a list that will likely need to be curated over time) before each Sigil release. Sigil translates Sigil, Qt translates Qt.

qtbase_xx.ts files contain translations for these strings. (For example, the translations are missing in the latest Spanish qtbase_es.ts file.)

Moreover, it's highly unlikely that the Qt developers will update commonly used Qt controls such as QLineEdit and QMessageBox in a way that would require major changes to the existing translations.
IMHO, the translations for these strings should have been added by the original developer.

It does as of now. That's what I'm saying.

Besides, Sigil itself includes translation files that aren't 100% translated by Transifex volunteers.

I've just tested the new Qt translations feature on my Linux machine and it works great! All of the strings listed by BeckyEbook are localized now.

Sigil appears to be working fine with Qt 5.11.1 on my Linux machine.
Is there a particular reason why you plan to ship the Windows version with Qt 5.6.2?

You're welcome.

Because the Windows (and Mac) versions of Sigil are still being built against 5.6.2, and I don't want to mix and match translations and dlls versions. Plus, 5.6 is an LTS version, and I like stability.

Retooling my Windows dev VMs for building Sigil with newer versions of Qt takes considerable planning, preparation, compiling, testing, and time. I simply don't have the free time to constantly retool (especially without compelling benefit) for the latest version of Qt on Windows.

The next Qt LTS version is 5.9, so unless 5.12 (the next planned LTS version) comes out before I'm ready to retool, I'll advance to 5.9.x at that time (and the translation files for 5.9 will be included). I DO plan to get started on preparations to retool soon after this next release so that doing so won't seem like such daunting task when the NEXT release time rolls around.
