Wireless connection to calibre.
Hi,

Is there any plan to develop some kind of software running on the kindle to connect wirelessly to Calibre ?
Something similar to calibre companion.
I know there is already this included in Koreader, but i am thinking of something lighter that could run silently in background when wifi is activated.

@kocoman: Not as such, but with the 'folder as a device' thingy, you'd get basic support (no fancy device-specific stuff, though, which might be a deal-breaker for Kindles, since they do need a certain amount of hand-holding).

virtualhere seems to be commercialware - $40?? Never tried it. "usbip" is Linux software and can be compiled, a kernel module is needed.

make sure the kernel modules you make are the same version as your firmware -
"uname -r"

Have you tried looking into the preferences of Calibre? It looks like the folder option is just an option of the share button?
I've not tried any of this, please experiment and let us know how you make out?

uspip / Virtualhere is not the way to go.

theses pieces of software are used if you want a computer A, to access to usb device connected to a computer B as if the device was directly plugged in computer A.

What we would like to do in this thread is to be able to update the books on the kindle from Calibre through wifi.

I see two tracks to be explored.

- the calibre wireless device protocol (used by calibre companion and koreader).
- or to have the kindle share a folder on the network (by nfs/cifs or even ftp) and mount this folder on the computer.

Obviously what we really want is the Wireless USB protocol.

In the absence of that, sshfs will work, and just connect as a folder. calibre will not be able to send the cover thumbnails (assuming your books do NOT show up as Personal documents, you want those thumbnails ) and you cannot send pseudo-pagenumbers. But otherwise it should work just fine.

PS: Using the already supported sshfs is probably the better idea (tm).

Note: FileZilla "just works" with the ssh bundled in the USBnetworking package (which includes ssh server for both USB cable and WiFi).

Which is exactly what you want to do here.

Computer B (has USB device connected to it) - through a bunch of hoops, the kernel on B is faking a USB device with the storage area of /mnt/us (or, rather, its lowest level layer of /mnt/us).

Then, at the other end of the network connection - over any type of networking - is computer A ...

Which has to do the same as with any USB storage device connected to it - mount it into the file system.

As mentioned above, sshfs is already supported and a "better idea" (tm).

Although your not limited to that, if you dig a bit here, you will find that we have supported nfs, cifs, nbd, and other types of export on the Kindles in the past.
Any of which allows part of the Kindle's file system to be mounted into the directory tree of a remote client.
(Also mentioned earlier in this thread.
Even mentioned by the O.P. - so I guess the O.P. already had the answer to the question and is just wasting our time here.)

So the Kindle is internally manipulating the userstore as a faux USB device? Interesting.

Although the OP was actually talking about the content server connection -- LAN/internet downloads, not sshfs or any other type of networked drive.

sure sounds like a file system export to me.

So in answer to the question "does anyone intend ..."
The answer is yes, we have been there and done that, several years ago (twobob and I).

If the required kernel modules for the device/firmware version of interest are not already built and tested, build an updated version - the scripts we used and other documentation are in the same public repository as the modules we built.

insmod required modules, configure, have a nice day.
