It's irrelevant, the point you made was that consumers don't complain about iThings, only the media and people who don't like apple (who, by definition, wouldn't be iConsumers); the lawsuit proves otherwise.

No my argument was that it was not a real issue for those who actually use device. If not, sales not go up to mainstream- and every1 return it to store.

not a real issue. fake. made up.

I would LOVE to have a laptop that is also a tablet, from Apple, because I've been using so many Mac apps, most of which there are no real equivalents on Windows... Mellel being one, I don't ever want to have to use Word, period.

What about the "oh, we had an error on the signal strength, that's why the grip of death decreases signal from 5 bars to 0 bars". You really believe that they had such a fundamental error on the signal strength calculation? Could it not be that they thought "let's boost our display of signal strength, so it looks like our phone gets better reception than others", and it bit them in the rear side when they had the antennagate?

Oh the agony and consternation when the slightest doubt is raised.

Please, your colours are showing. If it was indeed fake, why would Apple give free bumpers and settle the lawsuit?

Quote:
A preliminary settlement has been reached in the class-action lawsuit brought against Apple in June 2010 over the 'Antennagate' fiasco. Ira Rothken, co-lead counsel for the case, says there are 21 million people entitled to either $15 or a free bumper.

Also, 21 million is hardly a small number.

Complaints are one thing. Sales are another. Sales don't lie. Apple is crushing it. Did you read the recent dismal report on Transformer Prime sales? It may indeed be a semiconductor shortage but their sales numbers are barely a drop in the high-end tablet bucket. I think they shot themselves in the foot during the launch (yes, antennagate was embarassing too).

Like I said, and was not disproven, iPads own the high-end tablet market. Low-end tablets like the Fire are not what Apple is aiming at. Their whole strategy has been high margins (admittedly absurdly high). If they "only" end up owning 18% of the "tablet" market in a year or two then they'll be giggling all the way to the bank and still be the high-end tablet to beat.

I have high expectations for Windows 8 tablets but right now they're vaporware. And I'm nervous about battery life, something Windows mobile devices have traditionally sucked at.

Not exactly. During the presentation, Jobs said that all smartphones had antenna problems, and that the iPhone's problem had been blown out of proportion.

He then extended the period for iPhone returns and gave users free cases (bumpers or other cases).

All for something that, as it turned out, was only a problem at the margins.

The thing that always gets me about this issue is that Apple pretty much handled it extremely well, but still get criticized for it.

We obviously disagree. I believe telling your customers that they are holding it wrong and only reluctantly do something about the problem after massive peer pressure (without coming clean and saying "sorry folks, we made a mistake, but will get right on it") is not "handling it extremely well".

It has taken 18 months for apple to settle. They could have solved this much faster and without leaving a bitter taste of "our way, or the highway".

I realize we have different opinions of Apple, so I'd like to get your thinking on this: don't a lot of phones have antenna issues and doesn't it seem unfair that Apple is the only one that gets repeatedly raked over the coals for this? I still remember reading an instruction booklet for a Nokia phone that warns you about covering the antenna when you hold the phone. Is all this vitriol based on Jobs's bluntness?

The part about "all smartphones had antenna problems" was, of course, total rubbish. Apple had not considered the most basic principles of smartphone antenna design, putting the antenna in exactly (and only!) the place that many people hold the phone, thus covering the antenna and greatly reducing its effectiveness. (which led to the famous "you are holding it wrong"). The only other smartphone with the same problem during the last few years before that debacle was one HTC model.

Then, starting with the press conference, Apple did very decent damage control, giving away those free cases was a nice solution. After all, marketing was always the one thing Apple excels at. And yes, they hired a bunch of antenna specialists who copied existing Nokia and Motorola antenna designs. Those guys had figured that one out a long time ago.

Apple situation was significantly worse because they had 2 external antennas without any kind of insulation, so by simply holding the phone you shortcircuit them and become detuned. You could lose 25dB as a result, very significant, and worse when you add the erroneous signal strength display. Other phones have internal antennas and you can dampen the signal somewhat while holding them, but you can't detune the antenna and cause a drop of 25dB. The apple design was flawed, there is way around it.

Dear Apple lovers, this antenna problem is such an obvious case. Can some among you, NEVER EVER admit that Apple made a mistake? I don't see your problem, why must Apple's record be 100% spotless and every blunder be vigorously defended and tried to be explained away ("it didn't really happen", "others did the same thing, but worse"). Even Apple is run by humans, don't they ever make mistakes?

I use an Android phone, but if someone asks me what I don't like about Android, I have plenty to say. And if we extend that to the company, Google, then I could talk all day.
