I tried fbkindle and it's quite nice. A much better ePub display than duokan.

It does seem to be missing spacing between paragraphs, so things look a bit crowded. Also the book list is too busy and I don't get the redundancy. Each book takes three lines. You have a choice to show/hide book, which just makes an additional 3 line entry. The original firmware and duokan both have much nicer and more usable book list.

Didn't work for me on mine. I keep forgetting about the K3. It didn't even occur to me that this was designed for the K3 and not all Kindles.

this was certainly designed for all Kindle models, but was tested only on kdxg and k3.
The reason is simple: no k2 device around to try.

Just installed fbKindle on a K2i and it seems to work fine... except: first time i started it just got a blank screen instead of the FBreader documentation which popped up by default after my k3 install. then i quit with Alt/Back, restarted and it went straight to the FBreader documentation book....

-will play around more with it tomorrow and see if I can find any major deviations from how it works on my K3.

Will try it out on a K2us next week when I get it back from the friend that borrowed it...

Thanks Jetfin. I have a K2i and a K2 US. That sounds like what happened with me on my K2i. If you get the chance, maybe post screen shots or a video of what to expect? Thanks in advance. I think the instructions were extremely clear, I just didn't know what to expect. I did read some of the forum but stopped after I realized I wasn't getting it. Does this read DRM epubs? Specifically, library rentals?

And thanks hiuke for explaining that! It's perfectly reasonable and I don't know why I didn't think of that.

Good suggestion -i just added some screenshots of both K2i and K3g on the "About FBreader" screen which seems to be default on first (successful) start up.

Please let me know if you think of anything else that could make things clearer in the instructions!

I don't think so, but better if somebody else answers this because I don't have any DRM epubs at the moment to try out...

Why people expect spacing between paragraphs? None of my paper books have any.

Not true.
If the book has spacing it will be displayed.
And if there are no values defined which tell FBK what to do default settings will take over. If you set it up properly it will do whatever you want.
For me it looks like this (default settings, not the book itself):

But I agree the unaltered default settings looked very ugly on the Kindle.

WS64, can you please share with us your setting? I couldn't figure out how to tell the FBK to use the default paragraph space setting when it is missing in the books. In my case, I think when the books have proper spacing setting, it will be displayed fine, but when they are not, the lines between paragraphs are right next to each other, they don't even have the regular line spacing. And, do you guys have problems on Library view? mine has no margin on top and bottom, and all the font size and spacing are messed up on Library view too.

I like this FBKindle a lot because you can instantly switch back to Kindle's system and vise versa. but I couldn't find any good detailed manual on how to configure and use it.

Uh! Wow, FBReader for Kindle!!

Can anybody test how FBReader/FBKindle display an epub with embedded fonts? The Windows version I have, for example, ignores them.

EDIT: A good test can be this great epub: "Three Men in a Boat".

@ WS64: That's really impressive! I just tried Three Men in a Boat in epub on Duokan for Kindle, and it is not nearly as good -- had some spacing errors and did not preserve embedded fonts.

I suppose that I should remove Duokan before trying FBReader? Or was your example from fbKindle?

Opp! I guess those weren't the embedded fonts. It just looked so much better in fbKindle than it did in Duokan
