I don't know what version firmware is on it, but it's a version 4 firmware. My guess in this case is that if I was to need to do a factory reset, that's where I may get in trouble.
I think it may be a 4.28 firmware version. |

Yes, also that. You wouldn't be able to get past setup on the device.

I just now synced and am now with 4.35.20400.
Does this mean I have met the mandatory update requirement? Thanks. |

I'm not certain but I don't think the updated firmware has been released. I downloaded the Clara HD 4.35.30400 from Kobo. The internal date stamps in the .zip file and the checksums are identical to the 4.35.20400 from it's 2022-Dec-08 release date.

So they have set a 4/25 deadline and as of 4/18 they haven't even made the update available?

Unless the "mandatory update" is actually the FW of last December 2022, then it's not released yet.
I expect new FW for some models at least after the release of the Elipsa 2, tomorrow 19th April 2023, which is slightly more than a month before the new deadline. Maybe the deadline will slip? |

All my devices are on the most recent firmware of 4.35.20400. My guess is that the urgent fix is included in that update, and probably some prior to that as well. This warning likely applies most to those that haven't updated in a few months/years.
It would be nice if Kobo would list the minimum firmware for compatibility with their new system. |

I think it depends on what mechanism kobo is using to update the recovery partition. It's entirely possibe this is being done without changing the running firmware at all.
I'm not sure there is any way to verify that the recovery partition has been updated without either examining the storage media outside the kobo, or some form of root shell access of the kobo. But keep mind, this 'deadline' only affects your ability to do factory reset without the help of an attached computer. Of course, Kobo doesn't want their support center flooded with this problem, and there are a certain number of Kobo devices owned by people without access to a PC, but it's not what I would call *critical*,, just convenient. Edit: It is far more important to ensure that the upgrade process is as flawless as humanly possible. |

Has anybody, besides the OP, actually received a similar message from Kobo? One would think with such importance info that Kobo would issue a torrent of warning messages.

Yes, I received the e-mail this morning. I also received a separate e-mail about devices that will no longer be supported.

Quick guess: looks as if the Canadians are the first to be informed, which probably signals the order in which the change is going to be rolled out.
