Is anyone out there still using their Irex Iliad, I have decided to resurrect mine because I am desperate for a good 8 inch ereader. Cant remember though how long the battery lasts etc.

Charging it now after 5 years of sleep

Hi Onemack,
I still have 2 Iliads, but not using them currently. I like them too much to sell them, and unless e-reader innovation speeds up, my kids will inherit them :-)
If your Iliad was out of commission for 5 years, you might find that the batteries won't charge (the Iliad has two batteries), or that the battery life is disappointing (less than a day). Fortunately you can replace the batteries, or have them replaced at a specialist shop. Don't expect miracles though: the Iliad doesn't have power management (standby/sleep mode), so even with the new batteries I was getting 1-2 days of active use on a charge. I was o.k. with this, just charged it every night.

Hi Jmirko, thanks for the reply, yes I really like the Iliad, it was beautifully engineered and finished, it was unfortunate that they went broke.

The battery took a charge no worries.

I am not sure what to do with mine I've just tried using it as an 8 inch ereader but compared to the 6 inch paperwhite and Kobo it is sluggish and I have to load everything via Calibre. I am thinking of using it as a PDF reader perhaps.

The unit which i bought in Australia cost close to AUD $1000.00 six odd years ago, it is a shame i cannot find a functional use for it. As I said (apart from the Sony products) the Iliad is beautifully engineered and finished.

I agree it is a great design (if you like the industrial look - I love it).
It's definitely not a fast device, but considering the specs (128MB RAM!), it's a race car :-)
If I remember correctly, it doesn't read epub, only mobi. I haven't used it for that, however with pdfs it out-performed some of my more modern readers - both in terms of speed and image quality. If you use Calibre anyway, I propose you give it a try - simply batch-convert your ebooks to pdfs and load them on the Iliad. I think you will be pleased with the results.
I also used my Iliad to take handwritten meeting notes at the office, and it was quite functional for that as well. I had years of notes with me at all times, which I could search if necessary (by key words in the titles). If I remember correctly, I used a template in png format.
