What are: url:http|// ... urn:urn|uuid| ... uri:http|//

Principally, what is the difference between url:http|// and uri:http|// ?

But in asking this, I've now come across urn:urn|uuid| as well.

Can someone explain please.

I thought it would be handy to put the URL of the forum thread whence I grab a book release on here into the Ids box in the books' metadata. Should I use url or uri? And what is urn?

Crikey!

OK, thanks, Harry.

So a URI is a broader term of which URN (name) and URL (address) are sub-terms.

I think I'll stick with url:http|// when I put MobileRead threads' URLs into my books' metadata. I'm not sure why Gutenberg uses "uri" - even reading that article.

Anyway, thanks; unless I've missed something, I can use uri or url interchangeably. They will both provide a click-able link in the Book Details pane in calibre, right?

Yes, I believe that's correct. All URLs are also URIs (but not vice versa).

Also, like ISBNs, you cannot have a two URIs in the same Ids field.

You can have a URL and a URI, but then only the URI (calibre sorts the Ids alphabetically, it seems) shows as a click-able link in Book Details.

Eg.
Code:
uri:http|//www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/8914, url:http|//www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=183220
is OK but only the Gutenberg link is click-able.

When you change the URL to a URI like this:
Code:
uri:http|//www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/8914, uri:http|//www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=183220
the MobileRead link overwrites the Gutenberg one.

You end up with only this:
Code:
uri:http|//www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=183220
That's a shame.

It also means I can't have a click-able link to the MobileRead thread as well as Zelda Pinwheel's Id that she put in her Three Men In A Boat upload.

This doesn't provide a click-able link:
Code:
uri:zelda@mobileread.com|2010040720, url:http|//www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=48377
Pity.
