Firmware 5.2.190625 (Tolino)

Recently Kobo released yet another update for firmware 5.xx, currently only used by the latest Tolino devices.

DO NOT TRY TO INSTALL THIS FIRMWARE ON YOUR KOBO!

Official changelog:

• Reading Experience:
  • You can now use the Highlight function in books with images, like comics, manga, art- or cooking-books.
• Tolino Cloud
  • You can now upload your side-loaded books into the cloud directly from your eReader.
• Big Print Mode
  • You can now increase the UI font size.
  • Go to Other -> Beta Functions to enable the Big Print mode.
• Other
  • Stability improvements
  • Bug Fixes

The german news blog "Papierlos-Lesen.de" noticed some more changes, that are not (directly) mentioned in the official changelog:

• Side-loaded fonts were (partially) fixed. They no longer appear "bold" suddenly after reopening a book.
• The font "Bitter" has been fixed.
• Huge EPUB-files (> 300 MB) now open without issue.
• The slider for text margins has been improved.
• Blurbs for side-loaded books are displayed now.

The blog also lists a few bugs, that have NOT been fixed yet:

• Embedded fonts are only displayed, when they are placed in the "fonts" folder.
• The slider for the font size still behaves weird. It needs to be adjusted far towards the middle to see any significant change in font size.
• Hyphenation still only works when it is directly embedded into the book.
• The Tolino store(s) are still only a website link and not directly implemented into the firmware like the Kobo store. This means an extra log-in when you visit the shop and some functions like watchlists are not available.
• The menu for uploading side-loaded books into the cloud has not been translated from english.

In the comments under the article users report of more issues, that have not been fixed yet:

• The reader sometimes seems to "forget" certain settings when loading a new chapter inside a book and just reverts back to the default setting. Users have noticed this with side-loaded fonts and the dark mode. To solve this issue you have to exit the book and reopen it.
• The public library function is still a mess. The wbsite is not adjusted for Tolino / Kobo devices and users report having trouble to find or log-in to their public library.
• There are still no additional backgrounds for the notepad, only a blank background.

The Tolino store(s) are still only a website link and not directly implemented into the firmware like the Kobo store. This means an extra log-in when you visit the shop and some functions like watchlists are not available.

I don't really see that as a bug. It's an inconvenience, but at the same time this is how it also was on the older Tolino software.

Sounds like a mess. Are we certain Kobo is moving towards a unified firmware for Kobo and Tolino as some have suggested? These sound like completely different systems. Part of me covets that cloud sync for side-loaded books, but I don’t covet all the bugs.

Yeah. We really don't need Tolino bugs in addition to the Kobo ones.

Why are we posting firmware update notices for devices that aren’t Kobos in the Kobo forums?

This firmware will never populate to a Kobo device naturally, and while some speculate that Kobo is going to unify the two brands that hasn’t happened yet.

Because as a Kobo person, it's interesting to see what FW kobo are releasing. I do believe FW 5.x will come to at least the new Kobo devices. When that happens is anybody's guess, but my gut feeling is that FW 5 needs a bit more time in the oven before they roll it out to Kobo devices.

I also agree, for the record. There's almost no way Kobo won't ever be 5.x, or why would they retain and improve the Kobo-specific stuff in it?

I really like my tolino Vision color, especially that i can use the tolino cloud.
Iupload all my books from caliber with a script to the cloud and love the freedom of having all my books available.
Only thing i find annoying is that the statistics don’t work for the sideboards books.

I do see now how they do it. It just looks like the new firmware is missing at a quick glance.

I suggest you contact them and them know about the error.

Now my Tolino libra Color is up to date.

Now the waiting time when kobo reader goes v5 firmware too
