If you check the file system where Remarkable stores its data on your computer (for my Mac this is: /Library/Application Support/remarkable/desktop/) you can see it stores a pdf in the each folder that has a .epub ebook. When you change the font or line spacing it rebuilds the pdf to your chosen font/line spacing - which is presumably why it is so slow. The pdf does not hold any of your annotation though.

Have you added any EPUBs since you noticed the update to v2.4.1.30? Quote:

Just did one to test - didn't even open it - although I was watching the folder in the UI
Code:
reMarkable: ~/.local/share/remarkable/xochitl/ ls -l 42ed5459-e266-4c9a-8e69-7dd7f6aa851a* -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 20041 Nov 23 20:02 42ed5459-e266-4c9a-8e69-7dd7f6aa851a.content -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 414900 Nov 23 20:02 42ed5459-e266-4c9a-8e69-7dd7f6aa851a.epub -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 317 Nov 23 20:03 42ed5459-e266-4c9a-8e69-7dd7f6aa851a.metadata -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 2448 Nov 23 20:02 42ed5459-e266-4c9a-8e69-7dd7f6aa851a.pagedata -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1755941 Nov 23 20:02 42ed5459-e266-4c9a-8e69-7dd7f6aa851a.pdf |

Wow, that is crap!
It really seems, that the device is storing the ePub on its flash disk and then converts it to a PDF (which typically grows it in size by a lot) in order to display it. Ouch! I received my RM2 two days ago and I might send it back, because of this. While there are a lot of shortcomings I would have endured (hoping for a firmware update or community projects), the vision they have is just so inapt, that I may just leave this platform alltogether. With 8GB of, unextandable, storage space and the habit to duplicate each book, at least doubling it in size, this is not going to compute for me. |

The size of the storage is not going to be anywhere near being an issue for the vast majority of people - most files just aren’t that large, even apart from the fact it’s easy to transfer files whether my wifi or usb. |

i'm enjoying the use of my reMarkable2. however, i should have suspected that epubs were converted to pdfs from the funky way that epubs show up on the device (all text is left aligned, even when in the epub, the beginning of each paragraph is indented). at this point, epub reading isn't all that important to me (on this device).
i just wish there were two additional features: 1. the ability to email a document to the cloud service that host the files, so that it syncs without using the mobile app or the pc app to load files. 2. the ability to air print documents to a paper printer that is capable of air printing.
