Miller, Alice Duer: Women Are People! (poetry). v1. 28 Dec 2021

Another collection of lively rhymes for suffrage times by “the poet laureate of the suffrage cause.”

In 1917, this followed Miller’s sublime, satirical poetry collection Are Women People?. Again, it’s a funny and angry read, still bittersweet a century on. This collection in particular has some shining stuff about activism.

============
Alice Duer Miller (July 28, 1874 – August 22, 1942) was an American writer whose poetry actively influenced political opinion. Her feminist verses impacted on the women’s suffrage issue, while her verse-play The White Cliffs encouraged U.S. entry into World War II. She also wrote novels and screenplays. Her first book, The Modern Obstacle, was published 1903, but she scored her first major success with Come Out of the Kitchen in 1916. That story was made into a play and later the 1948 film Spring in Park Lane.
