Techcrunch: Scribd’s Decision To Dump Flash Pays Off, User Engagement Triples

http://techcrunch.com/2010/06/19/scr...ement-triples/

Quote:
In early May, Scribd announced its plans to ditch Adobe’s Flash and began the arduous process of converting every document (of its “tens of millions”) to native, HTML5 pages. “We are scrapping three years of Flash development and betting the company on HTML5 because we believe HTML5 is a dramatically better reading experience than Flash, “co-founder and CTO, Jared Friedman, told Erick Schonfeld. Although many documents on the web are still boxed into Flash players, the HTML5 format turns them into rich, interactive web pages.

That gamble has paid off handsomely for Scribd. Although the number of unique visitors still stands at roughly 50 million per month, those users are spending significantly more time perusing documents and sharing with friends. That growth in user engagement has rapidly accelerated in the past month.
Now all they need is add ePub to every "Download this Document" button

The more websites that dump Flash, the better I say.

Flash makes my Mac crawl to a stop some times. At times it seems that Steve Jobs speaks some truth... and the whole flash and mac issue is right on point

Yes, when you make the decision not to properly support some technologies, they're slow. Wow.

And Scribd's interface is extremely poor, that matters a lot more than "flash", or "not flash". Given that their "new" site throws up a shitload of errors in Firefox, I'm more inclined to believe their user tracking is faulty.

It is Adobe that write the Flash plug-in for Mac browsers. If they cannot get their own technology running properly on a major operating system, too bad for them.

It's still dependent on OS hooks which should, and are not, there. This is Apple's decision.

+1

Scribd's UI was terrible, and it had nothing to do with the fact that it was done in Flash.

I am not even sure why anyone cares about Scribd anymore, anyway....
