To Reason Why/Ties of Blood
I picked up this book (that includes the two titles) from a free hotel 'library' in Crete a couple of weeks ago. Never heard of the books or the author (C. W. Reed). Both excellent stories based on two families and their experiences/relationships before and during the 1st and 2nd world wars.
As the families are from Newcastle (North east of England) they would have the famous 'Geordie' accent and these are done very well in the dialogue without it being hard work to figure out what they are saying. The characters are both strong and weak and not at all stereotypes or two-dimensional. The writing flows well too. The books might be out of print now, so maybe they weren't such a big success at the time. |
