Drawbacks with Pop Up Footnotes in epub 3 ?
I have started formatting footnotes in a new epub3 as pop-ups. I suddenly thought although this will work fine on iPads, what will happen with other epub readers? I am afraid that the footnotes will become invisible on some epub readers. I suppose they might work on some kobo devices. Any advice on the drawbacks and device limitations in using pop-ups for footnotes would be greatly appreciated.

It's not really the popup footnotes that are the limiting factor. Epub 3 alone limits the number of devices with which your epub will be compatible.

I expect it's asking a bit much, but perhaps you could give some idea of the devices that are excluded and their importance. Apart from iPads and kindles, I don't have much experience of other e-readers. There seems to be a general industry push towards epub 3, but you seem to say this may not be a good thing at the moment.

Not everyone using an iPad will want to use iBooks and thus can fail on a number of different apps that handle ePub. The Kindle app will also fail on an iPad.
All eInk readers that use ADE to display ePub will fail. That means Kobo, nook, Sony, Onyx, and other brands. It also means a number of apps to display ePub on Android will fail. For now, using ePub 3 is a major fail because support is very very limited. |

According to Hitch, and she is in the business, iBooks is only about 5% of all e-book sales. That should give you a notion about the importance of ePUB3 in real life.

One way to get on the wrong side of many here is to suggest that because we are behind the times, we should all throw away our working devices, so that someone can show us how clever they are with epub3.

Yeah, drop the aside use, it is not supported widely enough unfortunately... I would expect this to be even in EPUB 2 :/

The popups will not work and the footnotes will not be visible in another way. There is no fallback. As footnotes can be very important, that would render the ePUB useless on those readers. Remember, there are millions of those readers out there.
