Alice Duer Miller was an American writer whose poetry actively influenced political opinion. Her feminist verses impacted on the women’s suffrage issue, while her verse-play The White Cliffs encouraged U.S. entry into World War II. She also wrote novels and screenplays. Her first book, The Modern Obstacle, was published 1903, but she scored her first major success with Come Out of the Kitchen in 1916. The story was made into a play and later the 1948 film Spring in Park Lane. [—from Wikipedia]

Burton Crane rents a house for the summer in a small southern town, and is compelled to hire a staff of local servants – a butler, cook, maid, and a “Useful Boy.” Jane-Ellen, the young and beautiful cook, will be a center of attention in the story that unfolds.

This book may be read as simply a light frothy romance, but its wry wit provides a satiric look at class distinctions and perceptions.
