Errors Starting Calibre 3.0 in Linux Mint 18

I cannot get the 3.0 to run in my Linux desktop. All previous versions ok using normal binary install script.

I have tried a 'normal' overwrite install. It does install with no noticeable errors, but will not show up/open. My resource monitor shows "Calibre" and "Calibre-parallel" processes running.

I then did a reinstall of 2.85 and everything runs normal again.

Next I did the "isolated install" script and ran calibre from the command line per the instructions. Here are the errors:

A ctrl-c will terminate the process ok at this point.

Nothing unusual about my Linux install as far as "BadWindow" errors go, as far as I know. Is there a debug command that may help with this?

Thanks.

A ctrl-c will terminate the process ok at this point.

Nothing unusual about my Linux install as far as "BadWindow" errors go, as far as I know. Is there a debug command that may help with this?

Thanks.
Installs and runs ok on my Mint 18.1 system.
use
Code:
calibre-debug -g
to start in debug mode.

This is the cmd I use to install calibre:
Code:
sudo -v && wget -nv -O- https://download.calibre-ebook.com/linux-installer.py | sudo python -c "import sys; main=lambda x:sys.stderr.write('Download failed\n'); exec(sys.stdin.read()); main('/opt')"
Check your display settings, go to the next setting down in size.

Are you using VNC or some such?

My normal desktop font is 12. Changed that to 10 but it didn't change anything.

I then changed my display setting from 1366x768 1120x720. Unfortunately my big screen monitor didn't like that and now I have a black screen, even after a reboot. Am using old laptop to reply while I figure out how to restore my original display settings in linux...

I did run the debug -g mode, but need to get back to a linux desktop to get those results.

Not using VNC or such that I am aware of. Plain jane Linux Mint 18 that all previous versions worked well with.

Love a nice, simple 'monitor.xml' to edit to get my display back!!

When I run it with calibre-debug -g, here is the initial output I get. The remainder past this is just a repeat of the list of errors I showed above:

For comparison, here is the working 2.85 debug startup that does work, but shows warnings here:

Those errors all come from Qt, presumably Qt 5.6 which calibre 3 uses does not work with whatever window manager/X server you are using. Not much I can do about it. I suggest sticking with 2.85.1 for now.

How can I find out what version of QT is being used? It looks like I have both of these installed:
Code:
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 56 Apr 5 2016 qt4-i386-linux-gnu.conf
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 60 Apr 5 2016 qt4-x86_64-linux-gnu.conf
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 60 May 12 11:45 qt5-x86_64-linux-gnu.conf
Perhaps if I can force it to use qt4?

I would really like to not revert to Mint 18.1, but it may be the only way to get Calibre 3 to run.

calibre comes with its own copy of Qt, which is version 5.6.2 for calibre 3.0 and (IIRC 5.5 for calibre 2.85.1)

Thanks Kovid

I also just checked my Mint version and it is 18.1, just like @patrik has, and his works. The only difference I see is that I am on kernel version Linux-4.8.0-56, and he is on Linux-4.8.0-54.

I show 54 is still installed, so I may try uninstalling 56 and see if it will revert to 54. Hopefully it will run then.

Update: Removed 56, rebooted, confirmed 54, but Calibre 3.0 will still not display; same errors with all the invalid/bad window errors.

I'm also running Cinnamon.

I don't think it matters, but my "get calibre" uses a different url than the one shown above.

Code:
sudo -v && wget -nv -O- https://raw.githubusercontent.com/kovidgoyal/calibre/master/setup/linux-installer.py | sudo python -c "import sys; main=lambda:sys.stderr.write('Download failed\n'); exec(sys.stdin.read()); main()"
Please let me know if you like me to check something in my system to compare to.
