Download metadata problem
Hi.
calibre, version 3.31.0 Win10 I have been using the "download metadata" tool forever. Just yesterday, all of a sudden, this error message appears when used: Traceback (most recent call last): File "site-packages\calibre\utils\ipc\simple_worker.py", line 289, in main File "site-packages\calibre\ebooks\metadata\sources\worker.py ", line 102, in single_identify File "site-packages\calibre\ebooks\metadata\sources\update.py ", line 79, in patch_plugins File "site-packages\calibre\ebooks\metadata\sources\update.py ", line 62, in patch_search_engines File "<string>", line 11, in <module> ImportError: No module named polyglot.builtins Any clue on how to solve this? THANKS! ciccio |

Please excuse the "me, too!" comment here, same thing just occurred today on my Calibre, on OSX, after years of smooth metadata downloads.

Can confirm happening using Linux Mint 19, I did both a system restore and reverted to calibre 3.28 still same error. This worked on Saturday using 3.31. calibre 3.28 on windows 10 still works.
Now is is good I checked metadata download on widows and it worked one time, then I when back to try it again and now get the same error. Spoiler:

I came here to post the exact same problem. I have only just updated to 3.31. I did notice the installation for the first time insisted on a reboot, which I did. Attempting to download metadata now fails instantly with the "Failed to download metadata" and the traceback posted below (exactly the same as the others').
Windows 10 64-bit. What I have tried (which does not work): - Reboot. - Repair install set - Uninstall Calibre and reinstall to a different path on disk. - Tear out my hair. Any help would be much appreciated! I have the same issue. In Linux 64 Ubuntu-Kubuntu 18.04 calibre 3.31 and in Windows 10 64 calibre 3.31. I tried to solve downgrading calibre to 3.30 in Windows but no luck.
(I posted a message here two hours ago but I can't see anymore ) |

A temporary workaround for this problem.
Go to Preferences-Miscellaneous--Open calibre configuration directory Then delete the file metadata-sources-cache.json This is will only work as long as you do not close calibre, you close then you wiil have to replete. bernie |

I followed these instructions, this didn't work for me. I still can't download metadata.

Okay, never mind. I tried it again, and it worked. THANK YOU. So is this a permanent fix? Will we have to do this each time we open Calibre?

Workaround is OK... but only for one download.
It worked! But only ONE metadata download works, then the poison cache-file is created and the process fails as usual. This focuses the source of the problem, which is good, but it's a cumbersome workaround.

Some Progress, but a bit strange
Instead of deleting the file "metadata-sources-cache.json" I set it to be a zero-byte-sized file.
Now it all works again.... even repeatedly through calibre restarts, etc. BUT... a strange BUT..... When I download metadata for popular titles, now they are almost always for the audiobook versions of the books [I don't use audiobooks]. Have NEVER, over years of use, seen this happen. So the fix is still partial, but liveable for now. EDIT: I also tried a two-byte file, containing an empty JSON dataset {}. This also works. Last edited by PacificNW; 09-10-2018 at 04:51 PM. Reason: Added info on empty-JSON file instead of zero-byte file. |
