Hey everyone

Hi everyone,

I am Fred. I came across this forum while making some searches about ebooks and their readers.

I just started e-book reading, before I was more into a "physical books", but started ebooks recently, since I couldn't find some books.

I read on my netbook through Kindle's Desktop app, but I am interested in getting myself a proper reader soon.

Anyway, Hi everyone.

Who said that the kindle for PC is not a proper reader? The major difference is that dedicated readers tend to be a whole lot more portable then your netbook. I guess you found out that one of the major reasons why some people convert to electronic books is that you can get absolutely anything without leaving the privacy of your own home. But do you know about book formats? There are three major book formats epub, PDF and mobi. epub is the standard format that is understood by most all book reader with the exception of amazon's kindle which uses its own mobi format. Dont worry about getting your books in the wrong format, there is a free software program called Calibre that can translate between the book formats. The on thing that you will need to worry about is called digital rights management or DRM for short. What is DRM? Its code that is inserted into the book to prevent you from doing things that the publisher doesn't want you to do such as sharing the book or sometimes it can do undesirable things like prevent you from opening the book more than a certain number of times. DRM can be removed from books you buy with some free software on the information super highway.

In my humble opinion there is no one best reader, it really depends on what you want in a reader. Price - Amazon (starts at $89), simplicity (Kobo), great software on the reader (often called firmware - Barns and Nobles Simple Touch Nook), being able to read absolutely anything you find out on the information super highway (Pocketbook Lite).

Hi Fred and welcome to MobileRead. I've got a Sony T1 and really like it. Much better than reading on a laptop

Hey everyone,

Thanks a lot for the warm welcome. ^^
And thanks jbcohen for the information. I know, it is a way like another, but like most, I am thinking of the practical aspect. My netbook is not perfect for my biblio-boulimia ^^

I am not ready for the reader it seems. In a month or two, though I think I might go towards the Kindle I guess (since I already bought some books there).

I am already using Calibre for converting my home made pdfs etc. for the Kindle desktop app
