Nontheless I am pretty sure the crack is in right hands now and MobiPockets should be happy about it because they will get only more customers who were avoiding them before because of DRM issues |

"Should be" and "are," unfortunately, are not the same thing. These folks have proved repeatedly that they don't think the way we do.

... and they will get fewer publishers willing to publish MobiPocket books because, yet again, a small number of thoughtless criminals have ruined things for the rest of us .

I certainly do believe that "cracking" DRM mechanisms is in nobody's interest. It can only confirm the views of those who believe that DRM is vital to protect themselves against the actions of criminal elements.

However, if cracking DRM rises sales, then there is no need for DRM in the first place?
It doesn't protect against criminals anyway. The darknet is full of virtually every ebook you can buy and quite often of ebooks you cannot buy. So, anyone who do not want to pay for their ebooks they can get them illegaly anyway. Then what type of criminals does DRM protect against? It leaves us with a group of people who want to pay money but don't want to get stuck with DRMed ebooks. If I were wrong, whoever sells *.lit format would be out of business long time ago, wouldn't they? Because publishers would abandone them the moment clit made its way into public. Forgive me for saying so, Jon, but in the United States, if you break DRM you are a criminal, and you don't even have the excuse with the MobiPocket format that the "disability exemption" to the DCMA applies - the MobiPocket Reader has no features such as reading aloud which are disabled by DRM.
One may argue that the DCMA is a bad law, but until and unless it is overturned by the courts, it is the law, and if you break it you are committing a crime. |
