I'm surprised nobody mentioned one of my favorite fantasies, Lois McMaster Bujold's The Curse of Chalion, only 99 cents at Amazon, Kobo, and elsewhere. I think the price goes back up to regular price at Kobo in 15 minutes, though. It's set in the same world as the Penric novellas, and The Hallowed Hunt, and The Paladin of Souls, but the 3 novels are totally independent and can be read in any order.

The 4 books in The Greatcoats series by Sebastien de Castell are currently on sale at Amazon US for $2.99 apiece.

The titles are Traitor's Blade, Knight's Shadow, Saint's Blood, and Tyrant's Throne.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B074CF5XQF/

Quote:
With swashbuckling action that recalls Dumas's Three Musketeers, Sebastien de Castell has created a dynamic new fantasy series. In Traitor's Blade, a disgraced swordsman struggles to redeem himself by protecting a young girl caught in the web of a royal conspiracy.

The King is dead, the Greatcoats have been disbanded, and Falcio Val Mond and his fellow magistrates Kest and Brasti have been reduced to working as bodyguards for a nobleman who refuses to pay them. Things could be worse, of course. Their employer could be lying dead on the floor while they are forced to watch the killer plant evidence framing them for the murder. Oh wait, that's exactly what's happening.

Now a royal conspiracy is about to unfold in the most corrupt city in the world. A carefully orchestrated series of murders that began with the overthrow of an idealistic young king will end with the death of an orphaned girl and the ruin of everything that Falcio, Kest, and Brasti have fought for. But if the trio want to foil the conspiracy, save the girl, and reunite the Greatcoats, they'll have to do it with nothing but the tattered coats on their backs and the swords in their hands, because these days every noble is a tyrant, every knight is a thug, and the only thing you can really trust is a traitor's blade.
This highly-praised fantasy series has been in my TBR pile for too long.

The End of the World: Stories of the Apocalypse - $1.99 on Amazon.com

This is a collection of short stories by various authors including Arthur C. Clark, George R. R. Martin, Neil Gaiman, and Orson Scott Card.

https://smile.amazon.com/End-World-S...388091&sr=1-14

Synopsis:
Quote:
Before The Road by Cormac McCarthy brought apocalyptic fiction into the mainstream, there was science fiction. No longer relegated to the fringes of literature, this explosive collection of the world’s best apocalyptic writers brings the inventors of alien invasions, devastating meteors, doomsday scenarios, and all-out nuclear war back to the bookstores with a bang.

The best writers of the early 1900s were the first to flood New York with tidal waves, destroy Illinois with alien invaders, paralyze Washington with meteors, and lay waste to the Midwest with nuclear fallout. Now collected for the first time ever in one apocalyptic volume are those early doomsday writers and their contemporaries, including Neil Gaiman, Orson Scott Card, Lucius Shepard, Robert Sheckley, Norman Spinrad, Arthur C. Clarke, William F. Nolan, Poul Anderson, Fredric Brown, Lester del Rey, and more. Relive these childhood classics or discover them here for the first time. Each story details the eerie political, social, and environmental destruction of our world.

The Dreamblood Duology (Omnibus Edition)
by N. K. Jemisin

is $3.99 at U.S. stores

Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Dreamblood-Du...%2C421&sr=1-11

Kobo: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/the-dreamblood-duology

Below is the blurb:
From the NYT bestselling author of The Fifth Season comes a rich, original fantasy about a king gone mad with power in a world where magic is harvested from dreams.

In the ancient city-state of Gujaareh, peace is the only law. Upon its rooftops and amongst the shadows of its cobbled streets wait the Gatherers -- the keepers of this peace. Priests of the dream-goddess, their duty is to harvest the magic of the sleeping mind and use it to heal, soothe . . . and kill those judged corrupt.

But when a conspiracy blooms within Gujaareh's great temple, Ehiru -- the most famous of the city's Gatherers -- must question everything he knows. Someone, or something, is murdering dreamers in the goddess' name, stalking its prey both in Gujaareh's alleys and the realm of dreams. Ehiru must now protect the woman he was sent to kill -- or watch the city be devoured by war and forbidden magic.

The Dreamblood Duology is an omnibus edition that includes The Killing Moon and The Shadowed Sun.

The Best of Hal Clement is one of the Phoenix Picks books for the week, available directly from the publisher for $2.99. This is a fantastic hard science fiction book, with some of my favorite Clement stories, including one in ancient Rome.

there are two other books in the weekly selection, but I'm not familiar with the authors. (Tom Purdom and an anthology edited by Alex Shvartsman)

Cross-post to some discussion of Robert Kroese's Mercury series, which is on sale right now. The discussion got started in the "other fiction" thread - probably my bad - so I'm doing the cross-post now to the beginning of the discussion there.
