Sounds like you got a Ethernet Connected Book.
After going through all the WD offerings, I have settled on the tiny little Passport, 1TB, USB2/3 that will fit into a shirt pocket and just plugs into the USB port when needed.

Could Steve had been so visionary that he realized that he could do no more with Apple and that thought just "finished him?"

Not really, from a hardware point of view, apart from the iPad and the iPhone between the iPhone 2G and iPhone 4. The former is the only piece of hardware that Apple has frequently updated and still kept ahead, every other hardware product they've made has always stayed slightly behind other products. This is especially visible in their Mac line.

When is the 128GB iPad due to be released? Just looked in the UK Apple Store and no sign of it yet.

Yes. With 5 tablets, 2 laptops, assorted iPods and twin girls who NEED their Disney fix it seemed like the way to go...

Android and iOS apps connect to it when outside of the home network where ever there is wifi and a couple of smartphones to act as hotspots when no wifi is available.

I suspect Adams was paraphrasing H.L. Mencken before him, who famously said, "No one ever lost a dime underestimating the intelligence of the American public."

The Adams paraphrase might be less likely to offend self-identified Americans and so escapes that particular interpretative trap, but I still like the huckster's compression in Mencken's original. It seems designed to be muttered by W.C. Fields.

Each bump in memory is $100:
iPad 4 16GB - $499
iPad 4 32GB - $599
iPad 4 64GB - $699
iPad 4 128GB - $799
(Which actually means this is the most reasonable (as in $/MB) of all of the bumps.)

The prices are about what people will pay, not what it costs.
In the UK, it costs £40 to go from 8GB to 16GB for a Nexus 4 or 7, but £70 for the same increase for a Nexus 10. Is that because it costs so much more? No, it is because that is what they think people will pay.
Does that mean a 1 Zettabyte iPad would cost $4099?

That is about right for I think I heard that the new Panasonic 152 inch 3D Plasma TV would cost $500,000.
Maybe that will be re-branded an iTV. It has the proper buzz and cost factors.

How does that work? Can any iPad app access the files stored on there, or do you have to store only certain kinds of data? For example, could I store Wired magazine that I have in Newstand on the cloud drive instead of on the iPad itself, and then access each issue the same way I do now?

Or is this strictly to store movies and photos and those kinds of things that aren't app specific?

I suspect it's the latter, because I've been poking around in Newstand and the Settings, and I can't find anywhere where I'd be able to tell the iPad to look elsewhere for the magazines.

It wouldn't help for the built-in apps, but is very useful for things like third-part video apps. You can either stream directly from the NAS drive, or download from it to the iPad and play the files locally. I use OPlayer for that, but there are others as well.
