Blanche Bethune stood on the steps which led from the door of her beautiful home into the sheltered garden she called especially her own, and knew that the sadness of the outside world echoed her own thoughts. She felt that she cared nothing at that moment for the beauty and comfort which had once been her delight, that she could not breathe freely indoors under her husband's roof, though she could hear in the distance the sound of the wheels of the carriage which was taking him away.
