He tucked a pillow beneath his chin. "I've posted notices asking that everyone conserve lavatory paper, but it's done no good at all. The Americans are particularly wasteful." He tugged the pillow slip up over the pillow. "I do feel rather sorry for them, though. Helen came down with it last night, you know, and they haven't any alternates."

From "The Pursuit of William Abbey" by Claire North -
"“They say I’m cursed.” “Do you believe them?” “Yes. I do.” To my surprise, he smiled, and patted me on the back. “You are absolutely correct, Dr Abbey. It is marvellous.” He sprang back to his feet as if propelled by a catapult, slung his jacket over one arm and his shoes round his neck, and gave his fiercest battle cry: “Now we drink iced beverages and celebrate." |

From "The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August" by Claire North
"Born some time in the mid-1920s, at her oldest she had lived to see planes fly into the World Trade Center. 'I remember thinking,' she would say, 'how frustrating it was that I wouldn’t live long enough to see what happened next.”'But she interrogated the kalachakra of the Club, the younger members, those born in the 1980s and 1990s, who shook their heads sadly and said, 'You’re not missing anything.'" |

From "Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind" by Yuval Noah Harari -
"ABOUT 13.5 BILLION YEARS AGO, MATTER, energy, time and space came into being in what is known as the Big Bang. The story of these fundamental features of our universe is called physics. About 300,000 years after their appearance, matter and energy started to coalesce into complex structures, called atoms, which then combined into molecules. The story of atoms, molecules and their interactions is called chemistry. About 3.8 billion years ago, on a planet called Earth, certain molecules combined to form particularly large and intricate structures called organisms. The story of organisms is called biology. About 70,000 years ago, organisms belonging to the species Homo sapiens started to form even more elaborate structures called cultures. The subsequent development of these human cultures is called history. Three important revolutions shaped the course of history: the Cognitive Revolution kick-started history about 70,000 years ago. The Agricultural Revolution sped it up about 12,000 years ago. The Scientific Revolution, which got under way only 500 years ago, may well end history and start something completely different." |

I'm currently reading my first "Miss Molly" story. Others have commented on Orczy's anti-Semitism in the Pimpernel stories, this line from The Frewin Miniatures brought those comments back to mind:

From The Impressionist by Hari Kunzru, this passage REALLY reminded me of Sahir Ludhianvi's awesome nazm "Taj Mahal", a very good translation of which can be found here: TAJ MAHAL |

One upside to buying a new omnibus copy of the Guide was finally getting around to reading Young Zaphod Plays it Safe, wherein lies this little gem:
