Update books in calibre and automatic update in kobo

I all, I have a questioni about the updating of metadata.

If I have a book in the calibre library that is also present on the Device, and I modify the metadata (e.g. the serie, or the title...) how can i update the new information in my Kobo Aura H2O 2nd Edition? I have to send the book to the Device and delete the old Version? It is no possibile to update automatically the device when I connect it at the PC and start Calibre?

Thanks for any suggestioni!

If you change the title or author, that would require a delete and resend since those would look like new books. For series and other metadata, you should be able to connect your Kobo to calibre and the updated metadata will be updated automagically if you have Metadata management set to Automatic management under the Sending books to devices preference. Otherwise, metadata will be updated when you send a book or you can update cached metadata. One exception is if you are using a metadata plugboard to add the series information to the ebook title in the library or using the Save template to change the filename sent to the device in which case, you are back to the delete and resend.

I would recommend using NickelMenu and configuring the USB connect option so you don't have to unplug/replug as often.

You could also look at the Reading List plugin to automate sending but again, since a book with a different title or author would look like a new book, you would have to manually delete the old version. Possibly connecting your ereader, select show books on device, sort by In library to show books on the device but not in your calibre library would be useful.

Start off by going to Preferences > Sending books to device and make sure that Metadata management is set to Automatic management.

Once you've changed the metadata in any of the fields, you can connect your Kobo to the library and the metadata will update automatcially and you will not have to remove the eBook that's on the Kobo and you won't have to send it again. The metadata in the database on your Kobo will be updated. I just tested this by changing the name of an eBook and it changed on my Kobo when I plugged it into my library.

So no need to replace the eBook. Just let Calibre replace the metadata.

I was noticing a near identical post here and in the calibre forum. Please read the guidelines on posting taking special note of section 3: Duplication.

Most of that is correct, but, the metadata update in the driver can update the title and author. That means these can be update without resending the book. But, if you do resend the book later for some reason, it will be sent as a different book and will show in the list twice. That could be avoided by changing the save template to not use the author and title. If it was just the book id in calibre, or something else unique to the book that did not change, this would not be an issue. I do get caught by this occasionally if I forget to clean up the titles were a subtitle or series was included and have fixed something inside the book.
