The 2019 Annual Reading Challenge List Thread

2019 Reading Challenge List Thread

Welcome to our 10th Annual Reading Challenge!

The Annual Reading Challenge is neither a race, contest, nor an “exclusive club”, anyone can join! This is just a fun activity that some of us have enjoyed doing in the past. Many of us have found reading challenges to be an entertaining way to set goals for ourselves, get ideas for books, and see what others are reading.

This thread is for you to keep a running tally for your chosen challenge. Please state your goals at the top of your post (in the title line if you can), and then start your list in the body of your post. As you read books, edit your post to update your list of books read, or other challenge status.

Please Remember: No discussion posts in this thread. Please use the other thread for that. Non-List posts will be deleted or moved to the other thread.

Discussions & Ideas can be found here:

Post #2 of this thread is dedicated to a Table of Contents for all participants in this thread. Names will be added, to this TOC, in alphabetical order with a link to that individual’s post number from this thread.

Previous threads were for 2018, 2017, 2016, 2015, 2014, 2013, 2012, 2011 and 2010

Goal: Reduce TBR by buying fewer books than I read

My goal is to buy fewer books than I read. And so end up with fewer unread books.

I start 2019 with 1014 books on my TBR pile.

Books removed from TBR

Read and Reading
  1. December 26th: Asimov's SF, January/February 2019 edited by Sheila Williams - £2.49 - 4/5 - 298pp
Not one of the best. Several stories I thought were a bit weak.
  2. January 3rd: One Enchanted Evening by Anton du Beke - £0.99 - 4/5 - 335pp
An enjoyable 1936 period romance. One star off for getting the weather wrong.
  3. January 5th: Grantville Gazette #81 edited by Bjorn Hasseler - £3.41 - 4/5 - 168pp
Perhaps it was me, but not quite as fun as usual.
  4. January 10th: The Sister Paradox by Jack Campbell - £0.99 - 3/5 - 150pp
OK, but too much of a YA for me, with unrealistic character development.
  5. January 12th: Closer to Home by Mercedes Lackey - £0.79 - 5/5 - 305pp
Excellent as usual, and a complete story arc, even though in a series.
  6. January 12th: F&SF Jan/Feb 2019 edited by C. C. Finlay - £3.58 - 5/5 - 242pp
Very good fantasy and SF as usual.
  7. January 14th: Uncompromising Honor by David Weber - £4.69 - 5/5 - 910pp
A slow start, but it delivers in the end.
  8. January 17th: Ready Player One by Ernest Cline - £0.99 - 5/5 - 410pp
Great fun. I've added hs other books to my watch list.
  9. January 20th: The Third Nero by Lindsey Davis - £0.99 - 4/5 - 342pp
Wrapped up a little too quickly, but fun.
  10. January 22nd: The Monastery Murders by E. M. Powell - £0.99 - - 250pp

Discarded
  1. Sword of Exodus - £2.00

Question Read 24,000 pages in 2019

I am lowering my goal for 2019 based on some upcoming changes in schedule. My new goal is 24,000 pages down from 30,000 in 2018 and almost 40,000 pages read.

I will continue to participate in the New Leaf Book Club and want to read 8 of 12 selections there this year (leaving myself some room for unavailable titles).

Page Goal: Read 24,000 pages in 2019.
Status as of January 21: 950 pages read, 2 books/short stories completed.

Current and Upcoming Book(s):Completed books:
Spoiler:
Ordered by finish date
  1. Deathworld - Harry Harrison - from the Classic Tales podcast
  2. The Dreaming Void (Void Trilogy 1, Commonwealth 3) - Peter F. Hamilton - continued from 2018

Premodern Europe, Doorstoppers and more

I had such an utter failure with my 2018 goals that I'm going to be quite conservative with my 2019 goals. I'm picking two categories in premodern history, classical antiquity and medieval Europe, and will read six books in each. I'll read two of the colossal novels that have lingered on my TBR for years. And I'll get my Goodreads Want-to-Read list down to 25 titles. My hope is that limited goals can be achieved and still leave me room to follow my bent as it bends.

I set a benchmark for total books each year of 120. I don't consider it a goal.

I'm linking to my Goodreads pages because I'm lazy.

Ah, I see several have mentioned the New Leaf Book Club. I read all the selections last year and my goal this year is to do the same.

Goal: Reduce TBR

My overall goal, as always, is to end the year with fewer unread books. Since I failed to do this in 2018, my stretch goal is to reverse my 2018 deficit (17 books).

I'm also keeping my extra requirement to reduce my paper TBR by at least 7.

TBR:
Removed: 6
Added: 7 (5 paid)
Net reduction: -1
Pages read: 1596

Paper TBR:

2. Cybill Disobedience - Cybill Shepherd & Aimee Lee Ball (k) - 320
3. Fool's Run - Patricia McKillip (p) - 252
4. Hickory Dickory Dock - Agatha Christie (h) - 192

Current: 83.6%

2. Always be Closing. Conversion rate better than 2018. The conversion rate is the proportion of new books I start. The target is 0.325. Updated monthly, probably.
Current: 0.14

3. King of the Mountains. My 5 longest books should total over 3000 pages.
Current total: 1542

Goal: 120 books / 10 book club books

The goal this year is similar to last year's, 120 books read (or abandoned), with a stretch goal of 160 books. This includes audio books. Individual short stories will be recorded, but not counted towards that goal until I've got several I can combine. Longer "short" works (~100 pages or so) will be counted as a full book, though if I have two of them back to back, I'll tend to count them as a single book.

Secondary goal is to update this list no less often than once a week. I managed that until the summer last year, but then that completely fell apart for a bit, before I got it back on track. It's really easy to lose track or get so far behind that one abandons the attempt. One trick is to update my "Reason for Editing" each time to show the last book(s) purchased and recorded. This helps me keep track even if it's been a few days since the last edit.

This year, a new tertiary goal -- to read at least 10 of the 12 books in the New Leaf Book Club and actively participate in the discussion.

Code:

# Bought | $ Spent | # Audible Credits
      13 | $ 14.98 | 3

Finally, all the silly colours here actually mean something, at least to me. The colour code for those who care:

Goals:
  • read at least 75 books
  • at least 12 of which from my TBR list
  • at least 5 of which from my started-not-finished list
  • finish reading the Discworld books
  • re-read some of my favourites
  • discover a new favourite author
  • read 9 of 12 of the New Leaf Book Club choices

Books

January - 5 books
Spoiler:

1. Star Trap, Simon Brett - 7/10 - a light 'cozy' mystery to start the year.
2. The '86 Fix, Keith A. Pearson - 5/10 - time travel comedy. Writing was flat, not my sense of humour and ends on a set up for book 2. I hate that.
3. The Left Hand of Darkness, Ursula K. LeGuin - 5/10 - found it a slog. Too much made up language and endless descriptions of snow and ice.
4. Convenience Store Woman by Sayaka Murata (tr. Ginny Tapley Takemori) - 7/10 - Novella about unconventional woman trying to conform. Fascinating.
5. Hotel Silence by Auður Ava Ólafsdóttir - 8/10 - a "quiet" book about a man finding himself in the midst of a country rebuilding after war. Affecting.

Total: 5

Goal: 75 books.

This year I want to read 75 books, including 5 non-fiction titles and 3 or more from outside my usual preferences. Try things I normally would avoid, like sports or politics or trashy M/F romances. I'd also like to finish off a series from my huge TBR pile, then some poetry or comics. Been ages since I've read those.

And finally, I really need to read more Lesbian novels. Because as much as I love M/M, especially paranormal mysteries, a steady diet makes me wonder if I've been letting down the side.
