Conversions crash calibre

I am still using 0.5.14 since the 0.6 is still in beta. I know that on the Mac, 0.5.14 crashes easily when converting books and this is expected to be more stable in 0.6 (I hope). In the meantime, when 0.5.14 crashes, it often won't allow me to relaunch saying a user is already using calibre. I suspect it has to do with python and I was wondering if there is any way to relaunch/force quit python or relaunch calibre without rebooting w/c is a pita when converting books. thanks for any help.
