I still buy books when I've enjoyed the library copy enough to want to re-read it later. All too often, when I want to re-read it, the loan count/time had expired and the book was no longer available from the library. I've even had that expiration happen with a couple of holds where the book vanished before my turn came around.

I don’t know how to link to a thread in this forum but it is in the Barnes and Noble section and titled Windows Nook app discontinued. It is a long thread, but does explain how to get the app installed in Windows 11.

If I didn’t have the Nook app already installed I would probably just buy from Kobo. It is easier to use.
It seems a lot easier for me to just download the book to my Kindle from Amazon, then add the book to Calibre directly from the Kindle. With the right versions of the plugins, I'm able to have a backup of my books with no problem. It's not quite as easy as using download and transfer, but it works.

Same here. I find that now that I’m not in an “Kindle or nothing” mindset for ebooks, I’m much more enthusiastic about getting them. I have a list of sources that I search through, prioritizing DRM-free EPub but also considering any format which works with my devices.

So now instead of just “library (but only if Kindle format) or Amazon” my options are library in any format, or any one of about half a dozen stores where I can source downloadable ebooks. I have happily found quite a few books that aren’t even in Kindle format and I thought were unavailable as ebooks, plus I’m often able to support authors more by buying directly from their site or a store that gives them more control over their publication than Amazon does.

You'd be best to buy eBooks from Kobo, eBooks.com, and/or Google Play Books. They all use Adobe DRM which can be removed and eBooks where publisher don't want DRM have no DRM.

I installed the nook app in Windows 11 and it did not work. I did install it in Window 10 and it did work last I used it.

I have a Kindle Touch. So for now, I can still get the Kindle First Reads books every month. Because we have a family setup, we can get two eBooks a month except for when they offer two eBooks for that month and then it's four.

I never figured out how to get books off my kindle. Since I have a choice between Nook and Kobo, I didn’t bother to pursue it. If I need a book only available on kindle I might try again.

Try purchasing a Pearson textbook (or most any other publisher's textbook) and removing DRM. Try purchasing an ebook from amazon.in using Devanagari, Gujarāti, Malayālam or other of the 10 or so writing systems used in India.

Not sure if it's been mentioned elsewhere here yet but it seems Amazon is also tightening the screws on Send To Kindle. A "security protection for users" is what they're calling it but apparently will cause problems for people distributing & downloading freebies from BookFunnel or similar places.

Now as we all know goodereader is, shall we say, a less than sterling source but on occasion they do get some things right. Sometimes. At any rate, worth keeping an eye on.

I did the surgery, but couldn't find a citation for the source of the information.

I wouldn't call requiring a full email address instead of a wildcard domain to be tightening the screws. Rather, basic internet security 101 that should have been in place from the start.

So a service that wants to send books through Send to Kindle will now have to use a full email address (e.g. noreply@bookfunnel.com) rather than a domain (e.g. @bookfunnel.com)? Not much of a change for the average end user since the third party senders I've already whitelisted already used a full email address. Though I admit delivery, support, do_not_reply, etc. are unlikely to be real people, they work as email names.

OTOH, the other sites I checked, Android Police, Pocket-Lint and eReaderForum attributed the story to BadeReader while there were a couple of items on Reddit from 5 days ago. It seems odd that Amazon has not emailed more people though that April 1 date always leaves a bit of suspiciousness about the accuracy of a story.

The way I use Send To Kindle it probably won't affect me very much. But I do get many freebies via BookFunnel on a regular basis which is why the article caught my interest. And I am also looking for more information other than that not-too-reliable source, but so far not much to be found. You're right, the date it's supposed to happen on is suspicious. Could be someone's idea of an April Fool prank, then again there may be something to it. Though hopefully nothing as bad as the removal of Download & Transfer which really sucks.
