is this something they have done in the past or they could theoretically do that?

also how long are non firmware updated kindles allowed to continue to access amazon services? do they usually cut people off pretty quickly?

Amazon has never cut off any Kindle. The only Kindles being cut off are the ones with no WiFi.

I thought the current alpha release of NODRM solved this? I seem to recall that there were ~40 vararition on the Kfx drm, and initially they were getting cracked one at a time, and then someone cracked them all at once (in the alpha release).

And even those may only be cut off where there is no cell/mobile compatible signal. My DXG was still able to get an ebook direct today (Send to it on the Web Page, then Sync/Check for Content). I'm actually a bit baffled as to why Amazon hasn't cancelled the SIM.

Edit: The DXG is one of the 4 models that only does mobi/KF7, not azw3/KF8. Of course it sort of does a few other things to. The FW is 2.5.8

There is still KFX DRM applied to certain books that DeDRM cannot handle. Amazon could apply that to more books at any time.

eta: it was the beta release 10.0.9 that added more for KFX. The current alpha doesn't add anything additional for kfx.

In the first post in KFX Input Thread (), jhowell described what the DeDRM situation for KFX as follows:

Even with the DeDRM plugin installed, DRM removal for KFX format is only possible in specific situations. It is not generally possibly to remove KFX DRM from books obtained using the Kindle for Android, iOS, or Mac apps. Kindle for PC version 2.4.1 (and newer) and the Kindle for PC app available in the App Store for Windows 11 also cannot be used.

The latest alpha auto-release of the DeDRM plugin can remove KFX DRM used by Kindle for PC versions 1.19 through 2.4.0, and e-ink Kindle with devices firmware 5.6.5 and later. Earlier versions of DeDRM, such as 10.0.3, do not handle the KFX DRM currently in use by Amazon.

There is a select set of Kindle books that are required by the publisher to only use the strongest copy protection. Those books are only made available in KFX format with unbroken DRM so no workaround is possible for those books at this time.

Hmm, well, I bought a couple of books today on Amazon. I pulled the files from the device (Voyage) and loaded them in calibre after making sure the latest DeDRM was installed and the serial number was correct, etc. books added to library (no covers) the tried to convert to epub and it failed.

So, it seems it is time to buy the remaining books on my Kobo, which currently I can still get properly into my Calibre

I downloaded a free (and DRM free) book from them today and it too failed to load even though one I downloaded yesterday worked fine.

I'm certainly not giving them any more money while they continue to abuse their customer base.

Are you sure your deDRM is 10.0.9? 10.0.3 doesn't work.

Yep, I just double checked. Mine is running 10.0.9.

Yesterday I was offered a new version of kindle, which I declined. Things still worked. Today, I was offered that new version again and I told it to skip this version. Even so, things are not working.

Yes, it is 10.0.9

Additional note, one of them on the book description pages says in the last line: At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied. Clearly a lie.

** UPDATE **

I got it to work. The issue was I think that at first I pulled the files through finder directly off of the device onto my filesystem. THEN, I loaded Calibre and tried to add the files from a single directory. I just tried deleting them from my Calibre, attached the device to the computer while Calibre was up, selected the two books from the Device listing in Calibre, right-clicked on them, and chose "Add books to library," and it pulled them into Calibre as expected (other than the covers being B/W, which I can fix).

Hope that helps someone in the future.

PS—It may be worth pointing out that the one book that was not supposed to have DRM did work, as mentioned above. The file I pulled from the device to the file system did have DRM even though it was not supposed to.

Only ever honoured by Amazon for non-KFX. KFX is always encrypted, but if the publisher requested DRM free, then Amazon makes the encryption work for any valid Kindle device or app from Amazon, that supports KFX. To me that's splitting hairs and dishonest. It does have DRM. They are building a walled garden and a monopoly.

They also claim to be the most customer orientated company on this world.

Ironically mobi downloads have colour covers. I don't see KFX as an improvement on AZW3. Amazon are interfering with the published work in using KFX. That's copyright violation.

What would happen if a publisher such as Tor said to Amazon that they do not want any of their eBooks in KFX unless they are truly without any sort of DRM?

I think I saw it asked below, but you are absolutely sure dedrm is 10.0.9? And you are sure your serial number is correct? ie. 0 vs O or 5 vs S, etc.? And KFX Input (currently 2.22.0) installed?
