eReader web site collapsing under the load!

The eReader web site is struggling to keep up with the load as thousands of new iPhone and iPod Touch users try to download their purchases to their new devices. The owners of eReader say on the FictionWise mailing list:

As many of you probably know, the ereader.com server is absolutely
getting crushed right now as thousands of iphone users try to download
their past purchases all at once. We're working to try to tune this
better over the weekend, but the fact is, our infrastructure just can't
handle everyone trying to download every book they ever purchased in the
past ten years all on the same day!

We ask for your patience. The initial crush will die down hopefully in a
day or two, and we'll try to offload some of the traffic to other
servers as quickly as possible.

Problem is we're all a bunch of out-of-control bookworms! I stood on line for 2 and 1/2 hours to get me and my wife each an iPhone. Then, God help me, before I left the mall, I was already downloading the Fictionwise app to my new device.

No way in heck I would wait 2.5 hours for any phone. Unless of course it was free and so was the service.

But it's not just a phone, Jon - it's a status symbol. Having an iPhone makes you irresistably attractive to members of the opposite sex!

I did not know that. I suppose that at a glance those clever females can tell the difference between an iPhone and an iPod Touch too.

....otherwise I could hold my iPod touch to my ear and have loud conversations with myself.

please do let us know how that works out for you. personally i'm always attracted to crazy people having conversations with electronic devices, but i'd be interested to know whether i was alone or not.

I could understand why they would have a few problems to handle queries on their database, API requests etc... But downloads ? It's just static files ! A simple x-send would do the trick.

I think their problem is just the raw load of download activity on their servers at once.

This is just the kind of thing I was thinking of in another thread (here somewhere) about formats and delivery: If eReader sent purchasers one formatted file (like ePub) that they would then convert to their device of choice, they wouldn't have to worry about customers coming back and bombing their servers for re-downloads. IOW, they are experiencing the downside of their own proprietary, DRM-based system.

But hopefully they'll recover soon, when the initial surge is over.
