Kindle not recognized on debian

I was planning on using a debian 7 based computer to manage my calibre library, but for one reason or another my kindle paperwhite v1 just isn't recognized by the system. USB sticks are recognized with no problems so it's not something to do with the port itself. Any ideas on what might be going on?

First thing first: may try with different cables, or with a different PC.

And don't forget to check out system logs (like messages or syslog).

Before you plug it in, run

Code:
dmesg | tail
then plug it in, and run the same command again. See if it gets recognized in dmesg.

Got it figured out. For some reason it was the USB hub that I was using that wasn't transferring things properly. When I plugged the cable into the back of the machine it showed up immediately. Which is exceptionally weird as USB drives are passed through with no problems as mentioned before.

Things are still slightly wonky though, as the first time I plugged it in there was an entry for the device under both USB0 and kindle, but I think it might be related to the automount package I installed while I was trying to troubleshoot before I posted the thread here. But that should be an entirely fixable issue. Thanks for the help.
