Amazon Defends Pedophile Book

I am so thrilled!!! I have been campaigning to have that book removed ever since I saw it. I contacted reporters, internet safety agencies and even wrote to the author. I am over the moon!!

Amazon were originally listed as the publisher of the book but once the complaints started rolling in they changed it to the Author's name. Nobody has decided this book can't be read, the decision to pull it was a business one. I fully support America's Freedom of Speech but I object to corporate sponsorship or fiscal support of material that promotes sex crimes against children. If Mr Greaves wants to make a website and sell his book through that then I wouldn't have cared but Amazon is a public website that sells books and toys to and for kids. A child with a kindle could have downloaded the sample and read it without any restriction. That is just unacceptable.

A child with a Kindle could download all sorts of material that is totally unsuitable; it's a parent's responsibility to ensure that a child's Kindle does not have access to the Kindle eBook store.

While I absolutely agree with the first part of this. The ability of a "child with a kindle" to download and read this is quite misleading. The kindle must be purchased by someone and much be registered with Amazon and have a credit card on file. Now maybe this kindle and credit card belongs to the parents of the "child" and if so then they should be responsible for the activities of the "child" using their credit card.

I don't think so.

There is of course "Lolita" as mentioned elsewhere in the fiction category. Books on how to build bombs, steal cars, rob banks, etc. etc. etc.

Should all this authors be arrested?

What of the books that explain how to build an Atomic Bomb?

I'm sorry DGM but you do not get to decide what others publish or read regardless of whether you want to take responsibility for it or not. Freedom of speech is guaranteed (at least in the U.S.A.).

Yes I agree but I'm not discussing parental responsibilities. I'm discussing Amazon's responsibility as a retailer to and for children. Not all parents are diligent and Amazon do not provide any means of restricting access to adult or offensive material.

The topic of the publication is irrelevant.

What is under discussion here is a fundamental right of the citizens of the U.S.A.

We've been round and round this in the other thread. I am not defending the author, Amazon or the subject. I am defending the right of the author to write, speak and publish it -- no matter how vile I personally believe it is.

However, when enough people decide that 'free speech' doesn't include publishing books condoning the rape of children and babies, it will stop.

Unfortunately, too many people like yourself are out there standing up for this excrement's "rights"

Nor is it Amazon's responsibility by law. The purchaser is the owner of the credit card used to purchase -- the parent.

You are right. And when that happens we will no longer be the country we should be. (some will say we are already there)

The U.S.A. is a country built on the Rule of Law and the ideals of equality and freedom for all. When you start taking rights and freedoms away you are treading on dangerous ground.
